The Free and Legal Mixtape Thread

I was going to make a thread solely about the new Skillz mixtape, but then figured that it'd be fun for everyone to post links to some of their favorite free and legal downloadable mixtapes.

So, here's my contribution:

Design of a Decade by Skillz with J.Period and Don Cannon. Get it here at his blog.

On this new mixtape Skillz ("your favorite rapper's favorite rapper") rhymes over a bunch of classic 90s hip-hop beats. He's long been one of my favorite MCs (and not just because he's local) and here his lyrics are as tight and funny as ever. I can't wait until his new album comes out.

I've been meaning to get some of Wayne's albums.

My favorite recent mixtape is Dr. Dre's In the Mix '86.

(Well, the tape is from 1987, but it was just "released" recently).

Cool. I'll have to check that out.

And this was just released this morning:

Wale - The Mixtape About Nothing

A mixtape about "Seinfeld"? I've been waiting for this one since it was announced a few months ago. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is supposed to make an appearance it on it!

Get it at Wale's site

Re: The Free and Legal Mixtape Thread

Guess this thread isn't as fun as I thought it'd be.

Here's a mixtape I came across the other day, via a PopMatters review: Novel's 808s & Mixtapes.

I'd never heard of him before, but I'm digging this mixtape.

Download here.

Kid Cudi, A Kid Named Cudi

This mixtape has been around for a bit now, but it's sooo good. I'd love to see him make it big, and guesting on the latest Kanye album certain doesn't hurt his chances...

That Wale mix was great, too. I haven't seen a specific date for his album, but it's supposed to sometime this year, yes?

If you like Wale and Kid Cudi, chances are you might like Charles Hamilton.

His website has like 6 or 7 mixtapes for free. Some of it is pretty good.

Sorry about that. I didn't test the Novel link from the PopMatters review (I just figured it'd be good), since I got it elsewhere. Just Google Novel's mixtape and you'll find other options for download. That's what I did.

And I imagine the same applies for Wale's mix.

Re: The Free and Legal Mixtape Thread

I definitely agree with the Kid Cudi praise. I normally don't like mixtapes, but that one was all good.

Just listened to the Kid Cudi mixtape. I like (especially "Man on the Moon")!

The Very BestThe Very Best Mixtape (2008)

This is very similar to DJ Kicks: Erlend Øye in that the music is a mixtape but then there's vocals by Esau Mwamwaya as well. So he's singing (often in Chicheŵa) over tracks by Hans Zimmer, Vampire Weekend, Architecture in Helsinki, M.I.A., Radioclit, etc.

It's fantastic. I've mentioned Esau Mwamwaya before but thought it was worthwhile to add The Very Best Mixtape to this thread as well.

<hr>

I'm getting the Kid Cudi mixtape now. I've been listening to the Crookers remix of "Day 'n' Nite" incessantly during the past week.
