Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024, D: Molloy) S: Murphy -- Netflix

Star, Paramount, di Bonaventura prepping fourth Foley film
By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK, DAVE MCNARY

Eddie Murphy is hitting the beat for "Beverly Hills Cop IV," working with Paramount in collaring Lorenzo di Bonaventura as producer.

The new regime at Par is keen on reviving the classic action-comedy franchise, which features Murphy as detective Axel Foley.

Murphy will work closely with Par and di Bonaventura in reinvigorating and updating the once-lucrative property. Project is out to writers.

Thesp, who will next be in theaters with "Dreamgirls," has always been attached to star in the fourth installment.

The first two pics in the franchise, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and his former partner Don Simpson, did enormous box office.

"Beverly Hills Cop," released in 1984, grossed more than $234.7 million domestically and another $81 million overseas. The next installment, released in 1987, took in more than $153.6 million in the U.S. and another $146 million overseas.

The franchise ran into trouble with the release of "Beverly Hills Cop III" in 1994. Pic grossed only $44 million domestically.

Bruckheimer wasn't involved with the third entry and won't be a producer on "Beverly Hills Cop IV" considering everything else he has on his plate.

Di Bonaventura, who has a producing deal at Par, said it will be a challenge to do the fourth installment as well as the previous films.

"Axel Foley is one of the great action-comedy characters, a character that Eddie loves. I'm lucky enough to help bring it back," di Bonaventura said. "This genre is missing from the landscape."

Murphy is in post-production with "Norbit." He also reprises his voice role in the upcoming "Shrek the Third." He is repped by William Morris Agency.

If they do this, they need to get back tot he grittiness of the first one. But it will probably end up being PG-13.

I just hope Judge Reinhold's schedule is free enough so he can reprise his role!

Yeah this'd only work if it's like the first and second films. But I think mrpayroll is right in fearing this'll be a PG-13 outing. Sure the third was R but given how that one was basically a parody of the first two, I wouldn't be suprised if IV followed suit and ended up being PG-13 to boot.

His role, along with Taggart and Serge, will all be played by Eddie this time around.

Forget Judge...the real reason III was so lacking was because of the absence of John Ashton. I hope an effort is made to bring "Taggart" back.

No kidding! I'm one of the few who still really liked the third movie but that's because the first two are among my top 20 favorites movies ever! I love the Beverly Hills Cop movies but they really have to find a way to bring Taggart back.

Rocky 6, Die Hard 4, Rambo 4, Indiana Jones 4, and now this.

I love the first two Beverly Hills Cop movies and thought the third one was ok. I really like Eddie Murphy, but I doubt I would give part 4 a chance.

Could this be the return of the REAL Eddie Murphy? I doubt it but it would be nice to see.

I like the series, with the first being the best, of course. I know Eddie Murphy has gotten himself a HUGE career resurgence thanks to his family-friendly movies, but if BHC4 is going to be a kiddy flick, then what's the point? Remember when Murphy was the bad boy of comedy and he would get slammed by women's and gay rights groups?

Wasn't "Beveryly Hill Cop III" PG-13?? And didn't they make it more kid friendly to make money since Murphy's career was not exactly riding high at the time? And yet it still bombed. Anyway, I loved the first. Thought the second one was just o.k. The third stunk. If they were smart, they'd go back to the original formula. Rated R and all.

And oh, Judge Reinhold had just signed to the next season of "Dancing With The Stars" prior to this announcement.

Hasn't Murphy stated that he would never make another R-rated film?

I never could understand why they didn't make this series "The Axel Foley" series, where each movie is a new adventure in a different location. How many plot contrivances can you come up with that requires Axel to keep traveling to Beverly Hills? Part II would've been so much better if it had that fresh feeling that Part I had. Part III, of course, was just terrible.

Or maybe team Rosewood, Taggart and Foley in Detroit for a change. Rosewood in Detroit sounds like it would be good for some laughs.
