new my morning jacket

well it leaked a few weeks ago. anyone get it? im on my second quick listen. so far i hate song 3. they are my favorite new band and one of my favorite bands if not my favorite. so far i am very disapointed. i need to listen more...hopefully.

sec walkin is fucking amazing though.

oh and i get a very jerry garcia vibe to jims vocals on this cd. not that thats a bad thing.

it was a good listen, but that doom metal sounding song really doesn't fit. then again, it'll be pretty hard for MMJ to top at dawn or Z.

Damn I thought this band was on the cusp of becoming absolutely huge and it sounds like they didn't pull it off. The released track Evil Urges is awful. I thought they could have been the next Pearl Jam.

their trend seems to be an up and down ride from the beginning. every other album is great, while the ones in between are just "good"

First impression of first couple listens is this is a tribute to 70's commercial radio. I hear traces of everything from Earth Wind and Fire to Boz Scaggs and The Rasberries. Highly Suspicious is the most radical thing I've heard with a Prince/Sly and the Family Stone vibe. The only band I don't hear much of a trace of is My Morning Jacket.

i agree. what the hell happened?
also someone above said they thought htey could become huge. i agreed with that also. to me they were on the verge of being the next big "pearl jam" esque band. huge following, playing arenas but not really having huge hits. they really are one of the best live acts out there right now. i saw them on their last tour and i dont thin ive smiled so much during a show in my life. i was lucky enough to see them with the chicago youth symphony orchestra for the encore too. it was amazing.

just listend to the new album....what the hell happened? jesus christ jim needs to stop doing whatever drugs he's doing and listening to whatever albums he's listening to and start smoking pot again and listening to "on the beach" and "pet sounds". this is the biggest let down of the year, thankfully that new fleet foxes album just came out last week.

I think they took the idea that they have to break ground on every album a little bit too seriously. I actually think there's a lot of good tunes on the album but they're done in the style of Prince, James Taylor and the Stylistics instead of My Morning Jacket. i liked them better when they were ripping off The Band and The Allman Brothers

So what album would everyone recommend as a starter? They fall into that "bands/artists I've put off getting into" and was considering getting the newest tomorrow. I guess not after reading this thread.

I would pick up Okonokos, their live disc. It's got a great sampling from each album, and they're really one of the best live bands on the planet.

Isn't that kind of a subjective call? Both albums have been widely praised.

I'll go along with Okonokos. A great sampling of everything up to Z.

MMJ's cover of "It Makes No Difference" is just amazing. Better than the Band's version, and I love the Band.

I'm about halfway through my first listen of Evil Urges, and I'm liking it. Feels like a natural progression from Z to me. Even "Highly Suspicious", the song that everyone seems so up-in-arms about, works for me. I think the song is hilarious actually.

I was just kidding. I think their Band influence is great too. Dancefloors sounds like a Levon Helm Band tune.

I didn't take your comment as a slight against MMJ. It was just the easiest way for me to segue into plugging their cover of "It Makes No Difference."

"I'm Amazed" is going to kill live.

"Come Closer" is one of my favorite songs ever.

I forgot which EP it's off, but it's a split album.

Okonokos is also a great concert DVD, picked it up for about $18 from Amazon. "Dondante" is a great song from Z that just sounds amazing live.

i would say okonokos too. if you arent into live cds then "z" would be the next best choice. i dont think its their best but it is very accessible.
