DVD Talk Review: Fright Night Lights Season 2
I just read Cameron McGaughy's review: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/33074...second-season/
I was interested in seeing how well it was ranked to see if I should give the show another chance. I had watched the first three episodes of Season One when they aired but it lost my interest. I thought it was a good show but it just didn't appeal to me instantaneously and given my schedule I didn't have the time for this and other series. The end result? I tuned out. In the very beginning of the review the reviewer states that " If you haven't yet fallen in love with this series, it's because you haven't seen an episode, or you have no heart. It's as simple as that." I don't assume he actually means this, but I have to say: This actually made me feel bad. And I am not joking. I felt a pang of sadness - like I was being personally told that I didn't have a heart because I did not instantly fall in love with the series.
Did anyone else read his review and feel that way? Wasn't it a bit harsh? I think it's simply because of how he worded it. It didn't help that his second sentence was "It's as simple as that". I don't think it's that simple. I was interested in seeing this show again and now I just feel insulted... and by reading a review for something I was obviously debating about watching again! I've never felt this way before from reading any review on DVDTalk.
That is all. Other than that it was an excellent review that piqued my interested.
Thanks,
GenPion

Oooh, a thread started due to one of my reviews…a first!
GenPion, no, I don’t really think you don’t have a heart. People are allowed to not like the series…I know some people who are turned off by the camera work, some people expected (and want) more of a sports tie in, some are tired of the heavy teen focus…it’s okay. When dealing with movie and TV show reviews, it’s all about personal taste. For me, this will go down on my list of favorite series, and when you feel that strongly about something, you want it to come across in the words you choose. So that was just my way of saying how amazing and powerful the show is to me, just one reviewer. It chokes me up every dang episode, and that rarely happens for me.
Season 1 is certainly stronger as a whole (had I reviewed Season 1, I would have also given it 5 stars and probably the Collector’s Series rating), but for me the level in Season 2 is so high anyway that it still warranted 5.
I appreciate the thoughts, though…it’s nice to know (if nothing else) that you cared enough to read it. Not meant to be harsh at all, just complimentary of the show. :-)

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS requires your attentive viewing for the first few episodes, because the camera work and the natural way lines of dialogue are delivered take some adjustment. But I agree with Cameron, it really does grab your heart and your sense of heroism and run 40 yards. It's great television, but because it requires some effort, it'll never be as popular as it should be.
I've just started season two, and the first episode has an ending that is completely unexpected, and makes me feel quite doomy about the rest of the season. It's compelling stuff.
