Jan Kounen DVDs
Any Kounen fans in here? I love his work, but I've only been able to get a hold of Blueberry/Renegade (R1) and Dobermann (R2) so far. I know he has other films out, like 99 Francs and the Shamanism documentary D'autres Mondes, which I've been dying to see for years. Anyone own or know anything about these, or other Kounen DVDs?
I know there's also a really beautiful special edition of Blueberry in France, but I haven't been able to find much info on it, plus the special features are only in French as far as I know. I'd love to hear some commentary or see some behind the scenes stuff on it though, a very deep film if you really look at it. I'm sure there was a lot of thought put into the making of it, especially given Kounen's relationship to Shamanism.

There is already a thread about 99 Francs here (not English-friendly). As to more about Kounen there is a collection of shorts which isn't available in English-friendly markets either.
http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=443261
There is also a side, made-for-TV, project titled Other Worlds which adds plenty to the director's obsession with the occult, as you noted above.
http://www.amazon.fr/Dautres-mondes-...7636132&sr=1-1
Darshan is also out but isn't English-friendly either so unless you are fluent in French your best bet is to wait and hope that an English-friendly distrib picks up the rights.

Abserd,
Actually, the Ultimate Jan Kounen 3-disk short film boxeset IS English-friendly. Most of the the films that have dialogue have English subtitles. It's only one film, the one with Emanuelle Beart, that doesn't have English subtitles, but none are necessary. I have the set and I highly recommend it - I don't usually buy short film dvds, but this set is the best, especially if you are a fan of Kounen.
You can buy the boxset here: http://www.amazon.fr/Ultimate-Jan-Ko...719558&sr=1-17
Concerning the French DVDs of Blueberry, all I can remind you is that there were a bunch of indian dialogue scenes, and the only subtitles for those are french, so you can either can the Region 1 DVD with the indian dialogue scenes subtitled in English or the French Pal DVD with the Indian dialogue scenes subtitled in French.

I don't think that anyone was arguing the opposite. If you click on the thread that I linked it is clearly noted that the collection is subbed. What I meant is that it is not available in the UK/AU.

Thanks to both of you for your help
I've heard/read good things about Vibroboy, though I'm not familair with the other films in the set. My DVD player is region free, so they should play fine. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any of this set for sale by independent sellers through amazon.fr right now, and I don't think amazon will ship DVDs across regions themselves. Good to know it has English subs though in case it becomes available, I'd love to get more of Kounen's work.
Pro-b, I had no idea D'autres Mondes was made for TV. I've tried doing some research on it, but I haven't found much info on it. I read an essay about the making of it by Kounen some time ago, it sounds like it would be pretty fascinating to see. I seem to remember reading that it played in a theater in San Francisco(?) I think, presumably with English subs. A shame they weren't included on the DVD. Guess I'll have to wait a little longer to see it.

Toddly,
I live in the U.S., and while I have a region free DVD player and can watch R2 movies on it, I'm pretty sure amazon has policies against shipping DVDs across regions. I can buy R1 DVDs on European amazon sites, but not R2. Private sellers who sell through European amazon sites, however, can ship R2 DVDs internationally. Sellers who do this will usually specifically list "international delivery available," or something to that effect. There are currently none of these listed on amazon.fr for the Kounen DVD set, unfortunately, so I'll have to wait until one goes up for sale from a private seller. Hope that clears up any confusion.

There are absolutely no issues to be had with importing from other non-US sites, especially Amazon affiliates. So, if you are interested in the disc go ahead and place the order.

Wow, that's good to know. Thanks. When I first ordered some DVDs from amazon.co.uk a few years ago, I seem to remember reading that they couldn't ship R2 DVDs to the US. I guess maybe it wasn't a prohibition so much as a warning that they wouldn't play in most DVD players.
Thank you for clearing up my confusion.
In other Kounen DVDs, I just came across this new edition of 99 Francs http://www.amazon.fr/99-francs-Jean-...8199483&sr=1-2
It just came out a few weeks ago, and unlike the old edition it apparently is english friendly. It lists english as a language, though I'm not sure if that means its dubbed or subtitled. It doesn't list any particular info about subtitles on the page, but I imagine that if it has an english dub there is likely subtitles as well.

Actually, it is not a new edition, it is the LE. And Amazon.fr are incorrect, English subs are not present on this disc.
This being said, later this summer there is going to be a Canadian release (via Equinoxe Films/Warner-Canada) though I have not seen any preliminary dates yet.
Ciao,

That's funny, such a law-abiding citizen!
There are amazon sellers that just don't ship abroad for their own personal reasons - it doesn't matter what it is. Although, depending on where you live in the states, Amazon has a rule about buying weapons (guns or self-defense type things) online...if you live in ny, you can't buy any weapons from an amazon seller from Texas (due to strict NY weapons laws). But If you live in Alabama, then you can buy all the weapons you want from the Texan amazon seller..haha

Thanks so much for this tip! Ordered one today. LOVE Jan Kounen's work and had the pleasure of seeing him present most of these films (along with Doberman) on the big screen here in LA.

My pleasure, I forgot to add that most of the shorts are widescreen letterboxed (at different aspect ratios) and even have pretty good audio options - I think some were Dolby Surround (none were DD 5.1).

Bumping this...
so is there actually a decent English Subbed release of Dobermann that's not a bloody HK fake? I've been wanting to see this film for years...
edit...okay, so I found an old thread that Pro-b broke it down in... I'm tired of waiting, I'll just get the damn Tartan disc and deal with the picture quality issues.
