The Ruins - April 4, 2008

I've discussed the upcoming movie in the book thread, but feel it needs a thread in Movie Talk since it's coming out soon now. I loved the gruesome novel but I'm not sure I have the stomach to watch the film in a theater.

Here's the website

And here's the red band trailer

Clearly Scott Smith, who wrote both the book and movie screenplay has changed things up a bit, especially with
Spoiler:
Stacy's
character. He made several key changes in A Simple Plan to make the story less difficult for the audience to endure. Here he might be going the opposite direction.

In any case, there's no way on earth my wife will go with me to a gory horror flick, so I'll have to check here for fan's impressions...

Without a name cast, that's how I'd market it as well. They could have pumped up the prestige with a "From Academy-Award nominated author of A Simple Plan", but the bottom line is that it is a horror story and a fairly guesome one at that. So why not market it as such? I hope this means at least that
Spoiler:
Stacy's nudity
remains intact, but looking at that trailer, I doubt it.

it could happen: "Rated R for strong violence and gruesome images, language, some sexuality and nudity."

Bump for release date this Friday. I'm going to try and make it even if the Mrs won't go with me. I just loved that book.

I'm going since I got a free ticket with Sweeney Todd. This looks similar to Turistas, which I sort of liked. That movie actually had a semi-interesting plot.

I really liked the book, so I'm definitely there on Friday. I think they are marketing it as sort of 'Turistas' type thing... especially because from the trailers I wouldn't guess that it was
Spoiler:
a killer plant movie... I mean, they even make the vines in the trailer seem like some sort of worm-like creature
I think it looks like Smith has changed a LOT from the book (condensing characters, changing what happens to who etc.) but I'm hoping that it works... the few clips I've seen have been pretty gory/intense looking - and I hear it does have it's fair share of nudity, like the book did. I really hope this one delivers.

I had high expectations for the book (and it delivered). My expectations for the movie are a bit lower though. Either way, I plan on checking it out this weekend.

I'm going to see this Saturday. The only name in the cast I recognize is Jena Malone and she usually delivers strong performances.

Shawn Ashmore, who plays Eric was Bobby/Iceman in the X-Men trilogy.

I always get him mixed up with his twin: Aaron Ashmore (Jimmy on Smallville)

and Jonathan Tucker is in The Ruins - woohoo! (although I gather from the trailer he bites the dust early on - or... I could be wrong).

Considering the subject matter, sounds like an appropriate run time. With more and more movies outstaying their welcome, I'm usually pretty relieved when a movie is 105 minutes or shorter. (Of course, matinées are still less than $6 here, and night shows are still nowhere near the $12 some people pay).

I'm seeing a sneak preview of this tomorrow night. I have absolutely zero expectations and know nothing about the film, I'll let you know what I think of it.

Considering how they made a very well done 126 minute film from a 132 page novella of Stephen Kings the mist I just find it to be unacceptable that they made a film that only last 97 minutes from a 336 page book. I wasnt expecting something over 2 hours from this cause I did read the book and I enjoyed it but sorry I would have probably have made it to the theater if this lasted over 110 minutes but now I will only Netflix it.
Sorry, thats what happens when they keep making these shorter films. I just wont support them in theaters 9 out of 10 times.

If true that kinda takes away the "ick!" factor for me because I think
Spoiler:
Worms are far more disturbing

Yeah, but this ain't your typical "garden variety" killer-plant here.
Sorry about that pun, it was hard to avoid

I would much rather see a tight, tense 97 minute movie, than an overly long drawn out 120 minute one... a lot of the book was internal character stuff, so it doesn't surprise me at all that they could get the 350 pages down to 90 minutes... skipping a movie that appeals to you just because of the running time is one of the weirdest things I've ever heard of...but to each their own. (Just last week I saw '21', it was 122 minutes and I wish it was 97min - would have been a lot better.)

I read this awhile ago, so I don't remember all the details. I'm looking forward to this though.

It's not being screened for critics in time to make the Friday papers (the advanced showing around here is 10pm tonight)... So we won't see much action at RT for at least a few days.

AICN has a review up though, which sounds promising http://www.aintitcool.com/node/36253
