PS3 upscaling and networking ques...

Just bought the 40 gig ps3 a few days ago and was told that it will not upscale. Is this true? Also, is it possible to network off the computers in my house to play video/music files on it?

It will upscale the only thing it does not do is play PS2 games, I use tversity as a media server to play music and video files.
