Californication - Season 1 (6/17/08)

Californication - Season 1 will be released on June 17, 2008.
from tvshowsondvd.com:
"...Season 1 stars (and is executive produced by) David Duchovny, who won a Golden Globe as "Best Actor in a Television Series" for his role as Hank Moody in this series. Just a bit more than a month after this DVD release, Duchovny returns to his classic role as Fox Mulder in the new X-Files theatrical film, which hits cinemas on July 25th. Showtime has picked up Californication for a second season later in the summer, but the exact debut date of the new episodes has not yet been announced.

The DVD release of the first season set will be in Anamorphic Widescreen video, with soundtracks in various formats of 2.0 Stereo, 5.1 Surround, Dolby Digital, and Mono. Language support is both English and Spanish. The running time is approximately 10 hours. Pricing information, extras (if any) and box art were not made available this morning, but stay tuned and we hope to have it for you soon!"

Wow what a pathetic list of extras. Showtime really sucks when it comes to extras

so are the only extras, episodes of the other Showtime original shows? nothing "Californication" related? and what is Ebridge Technology stream? bc that would really suck for such a fantastic show that i just caught most of the repeats for. truly blew me away.

I could be wrong, but it seems that with the DVDs, you can stream the episodes of other Showtime shows online, instead of watching them directly from the disc. Eh, not something I'll get much use out of.

While I still have a bunch of TV seasons to get through, I'm interested in checking out this show. Maybe when it goes on sale cheap. That's how I got into Weeds.

There's a commentary track for the pilot episode. That's about the only substantial extra.

Pathetic indeed.

If you are interested in getting this DVD, I suggest you pick it up at Target. Based on speedy's threads in the DVD Bargains Subforum, it seems to be the cheapest AND it comes with a Bonus Disc. Considering it looks like we are getting shit extras for this release, that bonus disc might provide salvation.

I guess I can make due with the lack of extras, but the apparently bad video quality really irks me, especially considering I watched the episodes in HD as they first aired.

My wife just called me from Target and told me that the sticker says the bonus disc contains an episode of some Tracey Ullman show.

^ Man, Showtime must be really desperate for viewers

I don't get it. R1 gets commentary on the pilot and R2 gets it on episodes 6 and 12. WTF!?

I just got back from Target. I was a bit pissed to see that the extra disc was the Tracey Ullman shit, but oh well. The set was still the cheapest at Target.

it just doesn't make sense. it is such a fantastic show that i just discovered in repeats the past 2 weeks and missed the first 2-3 eps. and really wanted this, but paying $26.99 for 12 eps and nothing more is burdensome on my mind.

I actually caught this show from the start, and love it. The casting is so spot on, I cannot imagine anyone else but Duchovany as Hank. It was clever, funny, witty, had some touching moments, good characters, etc., etc.

Thanks for posting the review scott, seems about right to me. I think I might pass on it for now (if the bonus disc is just other Showtime promos/shows), and just pick it up again when it goes for cheaper than 26 bucks. Really disappointed too, because I was excited about reviewing the season tomorrow.

Really?
I agree that the extras suck but the episodes are the main thing. And $26.99 isn't that bad for 12 episodes.

considering you can get most broadcast 1/2hr shows with 22 eps. plus somewhat substantial extras for around that or a $1.00 more on release day i would say this is rather pathetic. also, you can get all eps on iTunes for $23.88 so this is not a good deal by a long shot despite how good the show is.

in relation "The Sarah Silverman Show" (S1) which had 10 eps i think and some extras was $12.99 on release. (which i know in terms of quality is like comparing apples to oranges)

i still got it, but i am a little sour about it.

i do look forward to watching the 3eps i missed and listening to the 1 ep commentary though.

^"The Sarah Silverman Show" (S1) only had 6 episodes.
And Californication has twice the episodes and is about twice the cost. Its not a terrible deal IMO. I would have loved more extras as well but we do get 1 commentary track on Californication at least which is something. For a total cost of $25 with 6 hours of show isnt terrible. I usually only buy DVD's with special features myself but sometimes I have no problem buying TV season with little or no bonus features. Im glad I bought the Flight of the Conchords: S1 dvd set last year (and that release had NO ectras) and I know I'll be glad to have this one as well.
