Cop/Police Movie Recommendations.........
Ok I am looking for some recommendations of cop/police movies that are less about car chases/gun fights/action (some is fine) but more character/story/good acting driven type movie. Less leave your brain at the door, popcorn action, but something a little more thought provoking with a great story.
They do exist right?
I know a few, but I was hoping to get some suggestions on some more not so mainstream titles, or things a little more obscure, maybe some foreign stuff too.
Looking for something less Lethal Weapon/Robocop/Timecop, and more One False Move, Silence Of The Lambs, Se7en or even Copland.
Lets have them.

Seconding To Live and Die in L.A., among many other greats mentioned. Best car chase ever. Some others:
Cop (criminally underrated James Woods movie)
Serpico
Dirty Harry (the original)
Extreme Prejudice
Violent Cop
L.A. Confidential (surprised this wasn't brought up yet)
American Gangster (a recent example)
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (not as high-level as what you're looking for, but absolutely awesome)
And while they're more "detective" movies, they do follow the neo-noir cop genre:
The Long Goodbye
Gone Baby Gone (well worth a rental when it hits DVD)
Brick
I'd even argue Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks as "cop" works at heart; again, more detective-oriented, but still a good example.

Do yourself a favor and start watching the HBO series The Wire on DVD. The 1st 4 seasons are already out.
Ok, so there's more to the story then just the police side of things, but regardless, it's a brilliant show.

DVD Talk God
Deep Cover with Laurece Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum
Homicide with Joe Mantengna.....written and directed by David Mamet
Trade with Kevin Kline......Ignore the BS DVDTalk Review. Excellent drama about the sex trafficking between US-Mexico. I thought it was as compelling as Traffic. Kline plays a Texas cop looking for his missing daughter.
