I just watched Unforgiven for the first time and it blew me away. Tombstone is also one of my favorite movies. So I'm thinking I need to peep some more modern westerns. Can anybody drop me a few suggestions, please? Wild Wild West does not count.

How modern?

You can't go wrong with The Magnificent Seven or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

But if you mean much more recent, 310 to Yuma was excellent.

Open Range is pretty good. Kind got a little bit sappy near the ending of the movie but still I recommend it.

Oh, I don't know.. 80's or above I guess. I think I've got the classics covered as far as knowing what I need to watch. I have added 3:10 to Yuma to my Netflix queue but I've got a couple campy flicks to get out of the way before it'll come. Thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortunately good westerns seemed to die out after The Outlaw Josey Wales in the 70's and only made a comeback around 1990 with Dances With Wolves. Since then there has been the rare classic like Unforgiven.

IMHO, to really view good westerns you need to really go back as far as the 1960's and 70's:

One Eyed Jacks
The Big Country
The Man who Shot Libert Valance
The Magnificent Seven
The Culpepper Cattle Company
The Professionals
Hombre
Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid
Lawman
Valdez is Coming
The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean
The Wild Bunch
Pat Garret and Billy the Kid
The Shootist
High Plains Drifter
and of course The Dollar Movies of the 60's

If you're counting movies that take place in the geographic area of the Old West but are set in recent times (like No Country for Old Men) then try Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. I think it's a masterpiece, but I may be alone with that opinion ... but how wrong can you go with Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges? The DVD isn't anamorphic though and the 2.35:1 image suffers from it. Still worth watching, IMHO.

Report back after you watch them, they are all quite good. Since you mentioned loving Tombstone I would be interested in your take on Dennis Quaid's Doc Holliday... Val Kilmer gets a lot of props (and rightly so) for his Holliday but for my money Quaid's is the best.
