If you were Hans from Die Hard
What would you do differently to win? I would have...
-Sniped the cop from Family Matters giving spiritual comfort to McClane. They should've put two and two together from their radio chatter which was going to all their radios, instead they sat around shaking their heads saying how they should shut them up.
-Put the hostages in a room not a wide space to ease wasteful guard manpower.
-With more manpower for search and destroy, comb the place nonstop.
-Consider gassing sections of the building through the ventilation.
-Instead of smashing ice they should have been smashing the hostage faces in or actually go through with the promise of shooting one each time.
-Decapitate the dead hostages and put their heads on poles to intimidate Mclane.
I think these would have helped Hans and his merry band.

I wouldn't have radioed for back up to come when McClane hands me his gun. Instead, just pistol whipping him without giving up the element of surprise.
Of course, I figured McClane knew who he was talking to even before the whole Bill Clay charade.

1) I would have sent more than just Tony to try to get him after Eddie spotted the fire alarm. Really, what was Karl doing that was so important? Also, Alexander and James (Vigo) were just watching the roof. A few minutes after McClane starts transmitting from the roof he's more than willing to send Karl, Franco, and that idiot Fritz after him. He just didn't take the initial threat seriously enough. According to their research there was a security guard unaccounted for; Hans should have been more proactive.
2) When McClane escapes into the ventilation system why let him go? Karl had him pinned down and trapped, and then Hans called Karl, Franco, and Fritz out of the room when the police arrive. Stupid! Then when McClane tries to get Powell's attention Hans sends Heinrich and Marco (who are working on an important part of their plan) and gets them killed. Now, Heinrich and Marco have some culpability in their fate as Heinrich just ran in there w/o looking, and Marco got too cocky, but Hans should have known that. Given the ease in which Heinrich got killed he was obviously along for his brains. He shouldn't have been sacrificed so easily. Again, where are James (Vigo) and Alexander?...why not use the useless muscle like Franco?...why not leave Karl in charge of the retrieval?

If I were Hans I would have asked my brother to help me rob the building. Hans + Simon = Total Success!
Either that or just wait until the party was over and rob the building when it was empty (save for 1 or 2 security guards)

Why go after McClane?
Hans could have kept his men in place and have them take defensive positions. Concentrate his men in fortified positions. They have overwhelming firepower. Tie the hostages up as human shields rig up some of the hostages as human bombs and continue operations.
