CRAP!!! They also lowered all of the online discounts to 10%. I knew I should have placed a few orders yesterday. On the bright side, they are included in the sale. But I think I'd rather buy Torchwood by itself, since there aren't 2 other items in that price range that I want...

I've got a nice gift card to use, so this'll come in useful on some BBC comedies I've been looking to pick up, particularly 'Allo 'Allo series 7 and A Bit of Fry and Laurie.

Or less. There were a couple of items 15% off that I was thinking about getting along with a third that was 10% off.

The 15%-off items are now 0% off. :grumble:

Yeah, I was looking at a title that was 30% off yesterday, 15% off this morning, and now it's full price. Oh well, even at 15% it wasn't that great of a deal I guess.

A few I noticed this morning of HD DVD and Blu-Rays included in the deal are:

Live Free or Die Hard
Close Encounters
Crank
3:10 to Yuma
Warriors (HD only strangely)
2001
Lost in Translation
Oldboy
Catch & Release
Children of Men
Superbad
War
Casino Royale
Transformers
Sunshine
Good Luck Chuck
Mr. Woodcock
The Bourne Ultimatum
Next
The Simpsons Movie
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Pride & Prejudice
Man on Fire
Saw IV
Hairspray
A Clockwork Orange
Ghost Rider
Flags of Our Fathers (HD only)
TMNT
Serenity
The Pursuit of Happyness
The Game Plan

Of course, subject to change at any time, I guess. With the B2G1 and a 25% code (which was working in conjunction this morning), maybe something halfway decent in some combo with boxsets or something. . .

I hate these sales because they raise the prices on all their items. Why don't they just do away with the sales and keep their dvd prices at a minimum of 20% off? I'd rather have that coupled with the coupons than these sales which are no bargain when most of the items I want are selling at MSRP and the Member discount offers little savings.

The closest thing for a good deal online for Hd-DVD was
Matrix Trilogy
Battlestar Galactica (season 1)
Heroes (season 1)

After the 25% off coupon for members and added tax for me
it was about $180 dollars. So $60 dollars a set, which currently beats other retailers by about $10+ a boxset.

Picked up Extras Complete Series, Tudors Season 1 and Popeye Vol. 1 for $88.50 (w/ tax).

The same titles would cost $105.97 at Amazon and $108.06 at DD (the chepaest online prices according to DVD Price Search). So I'm happy with that deal.

Lenny Nero
01-03-08, 07:08 PM
Don't know what level they've raised them from, their prices are ALWAYS crappy, and the highest of any online store. Gotta pay for membership to get bigger savings and even then they're nowhere near all-accessible, everyday regular prices of DVDPacific, DD, and Amazon.
Never ever, in 9 years that I'm collecting DVDs, bought ANYTHING from them. Screw them!

robollama,

B&N is very poorly organized for HD Media.

They DO NOT list most of their Blu-Ray and HD-DVD under that specific tab. Look up the title you want by name, and pull up the regular DVD page. Then look where it says "other formats" and it will have a link to the Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.

Many HD media titles are NOT included in this sale -- I searched a lot today to find the ones in my post #14 above. :)

Will probably pass as even items that had a decent discount before the "sale" started (Tudors, for example) were not that great a deal with the G2G1 terms and the limitations on the free items.

However, I was wondering about something (just in case). Seems like I remember last year during the fantastic B1G1 sale that nearly everything in the store (except some HBO sets & a few others) were part of the sale if you ordered them IN-STORE and had them shipped to him (w/ free shipping). The on-line sale, of course, were limited to the items with icons.

Is this sale the same? If so, might be able to find a group of three items that would be worth it.

According to the details on the site. "This offer is also valid for all DVD titles at Barnes & Noble stores with a Music/DVD Department."

Sounds to me like you can buy the items right in the store with this deal. It also sounds like it includes everything.

I thought of one way to maximize this deal. You don't need to select 3 items of similar value. You want ONE item that is more expensive, so that after the 25% coupon it becomes a similar value. I ordered Torchwood S1, 24 S6, and Lost S3. Torchwood is a much more expensive title, but after 25% off it was priced about the same as 24. $92 + tax for all three (Torchwood by itself retails for $80)

dfxartist
01-04-08, 10:34 AM
I have yet to see a store with Hd-dvd or Blu ray discs on the shelf. I believe you need to order them. Also instore is usually only the 10% off MSRP, which for the most part is UGG. I don't think I could be charming enough to convince the clerk to do the 25% off one item and the b2g1. I had a difficult enough time trying to get them to convince them that all the box sets were on sale last year.

Will have to investigate this idea.

Another thought (for those of us who sometimes get more than one copy of the same title & then sell/trade the extras to help finance the keepers) is to order 3 of the same title. I put 3 of The Tudors in my cart, for instance, and went to the final stage of checkout. Sure enough, it deducted the cost of one (plus membership discount). Unfortunately, the price had been raised to the point that, even this proved to be cost prohibitive (about $25 each, which I could match or find cheaper elsewhere...especially during DD's 20% off sale). If the price had remained at $25 each as they were when I first looked at the sale on Wednesday, the final per-item cost would have been around $18 (tax included).

B&N's practice of raising prices during a sale is so irritating that I don't think I'll re-up my membership since I opened a second one during the 50% off coupon (had enough foresight to order stuff early before the prices got raised). I can always rejoin if they repeat this coupon deal.

Meanwhile, if anybody finds any really good deals with the B2G1 currently going on, please post them.

Something I noticed that hasn't been explicitly mentioned: If you use the "25% off one item" coupon with the B2G1F on three identically priced items, the 25% discount is not applied to the item reduced to $0.00.

Apparently, their system puts the items in descending $ amount, applies the coupon to the first item on the list, and shows the last item on the list as free.

For instance (adding in my member discount):

Star Trek: DS9 S4 $69.98 - 35% = $45.48
Star Trek: DS9 S5 $69.98 - 10% = $62.98
Star Trek: DS9 S7 $69.98 FREE = $0.00 (Season 6 wasn't in B2G1F sale)
======
Total $108.46
Each Season $36.16

Plus tax, of course. But with my B&N MasterCard, I get back slightly more than I lose to the tax I'm charged online.

Ignoring tax and (potential) rebate, this results in a 48 1/3% discount from the online prices (41 2/3% for nonmembers). This can be used for others: Wild Wild West Seasons 1-3 for about $77.48 mem/$87.48 nonmem ($25.83/$29.16 each), Sopranos Seasons 1-3 (already 10% off) for about $83.67/$94.47 ($27.89/$31.49 each)....

Warm deals rather than hot, but worth taking a look. (Now if only I could find some spare money lying around....)

I'm not sure I agree with that statement. The 25% is applied to the most expensive item. Perhaps you mean after the coupon is applied, it always lists that item first. And as far as I have always seen, the freebie is always the least expensive item. Perhaps it does indeed put it last. But if you mean that you can manipulate your shopping cart to get it to discount certain items or give certain items for free, then you are incorrect.

But if you mean that you can manipulate your shopping cart to get it to discount certain items or give certain items for free, then you are incorrect.

That's not what I'm saying. Let's try a different example (assuming the B&N 10% discount): Put items priced $89.98, $69.98, and $49.99 in your cart, then view your cart. They will be automatically sorted by dollar amount, and show (after 10% discount) $89.98, $62.98, and $0.00 (the free one). When you get to the part of the checkout that lets you enter a coupon, use F3T6K4L (25% off one item). Out of the three items in the cart, the $89.98 item is the largest. That one is discounted to $64.98. So the total is $64.98 + $62.98 + $0.00 + tax. Easypeasy.

Now let's try three items for $69.98, $69.98, and $69.98 (which are already sorted by dollar amount). Again, it discounts by 10% (B&N discount) to $62.98, $62.98, $0.00 (the free one). Enter the coupon and it takes 25% off the most expensive (top of the list), to $45.48, $62.98, $0.00. The total is $45.48 + $62.98 + $0.00 +tax = $108.46 + tax.

So their website marks the least expensive item down to $0.00 before it takes 25% off the most expensive. Otherwise, you would have $62.98, $62.98, $62.98, then $45.48, $62.98, $62.98, then $0.00, $62.98, $62.98 = $125.96 + tax.

No manipulation, just a better discount than some people might think.

I can't afford to, actually. I spent too much over Christmas. :D

But I put three items in the cart that were part of the sale, used code F3T6K4L for 25% off, and it's showing the most expensive item with the coupon discount and the least expensive as $0.00, so it's working at least through when it shows the final button to "Place My Order."

i could be wrong about this, but this really is good for those of us who greatly prefer in-person purchasing and already have the B&N membership...

Take 3 Criterion DVDs for instance... all items over a certain dollar amount ($35?) are automatically 10% off for non members... 20% for members. So essentially three Criterion DVDs (originally priced $40/each) actually work out to $64 + tax (or $21.33/ea.). This doesn't work for the lower tier Criterions so I'm assuming it's in the $35-40 minimum that sets off the 10-20% savings.
This is how I did it for their sale last summer and they let me do special orders so essentially it's the best in-store deal for higher priced DVDs outside of a store closing... no?

I say I could be wrong about this because I haven't bought a DVD there since this sale last summer... who knows if policy has changed... But I was definitely walking in with $70 and coming out with 3 higher-end Criterions during the last sale.

I don't know about the in-store 10% off deal, but if you combine the 3-for-2 and the membership discount and a 25%-off coupon, the prices + tax work out to the following for me:

High tier titles: $22 each
Low tier titles: $17 each

this is obviously YMMV but its worth a try:

my friend and i just went to the b&n store here and were able to get the clerk to scan 2 of the 25% off coupons (1 for members and 1 for non) to go along with the b2g1 deal. we hardly had to mention the separate coupons and he was willing to ring them both up.

I used the 25% off coupon and then got an additional 10% off on my order for being a member of an honor society, so it worked out pretty good. :)

It does end on 1/31. Technically however the sale lasts until 2/1 2:59am EST to facilitate orders up until midnight 1/31 pacific time.
I'm just thinking that people may see the thread title and think that they have until 2/1 to go the stores and get in on the deal.

It might be best to change the thread title.

I agree. The sale ends on the 31st. People not on the West coast get an extra 1-3 hours, but for all intents and purposes the sale ends 1/31

I'm pondering whether to pick up Torchwood with the first 2 seasons of Lost since they're still at 40% off and I have yet to pick them up and have wanted to for a while.

I'll probably place that order on the 31st, I'll procrastinate until the last minute as my backlog is extensive, yet I'd like to get the set at these excellent prices.

Do NOT wait. Those prices could change tomorrow or even later today. I have seen prices change several times over several days, going from 30% to 0% off.

with BN you need to grab-it when you see it as it may not come back to that price for QUITE awhile, if ever. 40% off for DVD's is unusual for BN, normally the lowest, except for clearance, holiday specials, etc. is 30%.

Do not wait !

Has anyone else had trouble using the 25% codes with the Buy 2 Get 1 deal? I'm trying to use it desperately before the codes expire, and it's not working.

Got me Futurama Season 3, Gladiator Extended Ed. and Nosferatu Ultimate Ed. Avail 25% off coupon plus member discount and B2G1 promo. Great deal I suppose.

Bumping back to page 1 since today is the last day.

I bought a few titles yesterday, and have a bunch of B&N gift cards/store credit, but I don't think I'm going to rush to use it today. I mean, this deal isn't the best they've offered in the past, and will likely not be the last great deal, so I think I'll wait. I'm sure we'll someday have B1G1 again, or at least last week's B2G1 with 30% off coupons. Right?

it worked for me. i got three HD DVDs: Hot Fuzz, The Bourne Ultimatum, and The Untouchables. 25% off of Hot Fuzz and the Untouchables for free gave me all three for $60 after tax. not the best deal ever for those titles, but still about $15 better than paying current amazon prices for all them.
