Album notes
This 24-track compilation was specially curated by Page, Plant, and Jones, and represents the juiciest moments from Led Zeppelin's illustrious career. The songlist includes such classic Zep hits as "Stairway to Heaven," "Whole Lotta Love," and "Kashmir." David Fricke's liner notes are scholarly but steeped in real fandom.

Is this just a greatest hits collection?

Sounds like it. If you have all of the tracks from CDs/Albums you could easily make your own playlist that sounds just the same. Seems like a money grab. I like Zeppelin, but I don't like them enough to rebuy something I already own.

Oh, it's a complete money grab. There's absolutely nothing here that hasn't been available before, and the material has already all been re-mastered, so it's not like that could be a selling point, either. In fact, it just a re-packaging of the Early Days and Latter Days compilation discs that were released back in 1999 - only with a new name, new artwork, and slightly re-worked song list. Save your money.

Yea, that's what I figured. Oh well. Maybe someday they'll unearth some unreleased rare tracks from some dusty old box..........

From Wikipedia:

Mothership is a compilation album by English rock group Led Zeppelin, scheduled for release by Atlantic/Rhino on November 12, 2007 in the UK, and November 13, 2007 in the US. The songs included were chosen by surviving members Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, representing all eight of the band's studio albums. In addition to a two-disc set, the album will also be available in both "deluxe" and "collector's" editions with a DVD featuring varied live content from the previously released Led Zeppelin DVD. A 4-LP vinyl package will also be sold. It has also been confirmed that Led Zeppelin's entire catalogue--including this album--will be available on the iTunes Store upon release.
The track-listing is very similar to the Early Days/Latter Days compilations which came out several years ago:

Early Days: Best of Led Zeppelin Volume One

01. Good Times, Bad Times
02. Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You
03. Dazed and Confused
04. Communication Breakdown
05. Whole Lotta Love
06. What Is and What Should Never Be
07. Immigrant Song
08. Since I've Been Loving You
09. Black Dog
10. Rock and Roll
11. The Battle of Evermore
12. When the Levee Breaks
13. Stairway to Heaven

Latter Days: Best of Led Zeppelin Volume Two
01. The Song Remains the Same
02. No Quarter
03. Houses of the Holy
04. Trampled Under Foot
05. Kashmir
06. Ten Years Gone
07. Achilles Last Stand
08. Nobody's Fault but Mine
09. All My Love
10. In the Evening

Mothership drops:

What Is and What Should Never Be
The Battle of Evermore
Ten Years Gone

And adds:

Ramble On
Heartbreaker
Over the Hills and Far Away
D'Yer Maker

And every time they release a "new" Led Zeppelin compilation, I appreciate my Complete Studio Recordings boxed set that much more.

Ditto/ I found my used copy at Amoeba a couple of years back in perfect condition. Worth every penny.

Are you sure these cds are not supposed to sound better?
Is this just a repackaging fro the holidays?

And to take advantage of the buzz surrounding the London reunion gig.

Nope, the entire Zeppelin catalog was already re-mastered, and nothing's changed, technology wise, since the time it was done to improve it any better than it currently is. You'll notice from that press release in one of the prior posts that it also lists nothing about remastered, specifically because they didn't do anything new with it. If they had, it would be listed as a strategic selling point.

even the DVD is recycled from the last DVD. no reason for this. at all.

what does look to be pretty cool is the reissue of "The Song That Remains The Same". that might be worth picking up

That will be definitely worth getting, as besides being out of print for a number of years, it is completely re-mastered, too.

I thought they had 9 albums.

I have the complete box set which includes 10 discs, 1 for each release and 2 from Physical Graffiti...what am I missing?

In Through the Out Door was their last recorded album. Coda is a compilation.

(Compilation of garbage. . .)

If I had to choose between Early Days/Latter Days and Mothership, I'd take Mothership in a heartbeat. Over the Hills and Far Away and D'Yer Maker are 2 of my favs. Also like Ramble On and Heartbreaker better than the 3 different ones on ED/LD.

Not touching this. There is no incentive besides packaging.

I would have thought they'd have included "Tangerine" this time to a Zep collection. For the people out there who don't know the albums, and only collect hit compilations, Tangerine would have been a good wake up call for them to investigate further than "Mothership."

No such luck. Boo!

Which is weird because the track managed to find its way onto Encomium.

Sure, given the choice I'd pick Mothership, too, if I didn't own either or any Zep collection. But if you have any of the prior releases...

- Led Zeppelin - Box Set (4 disc set)
- Led Zeppelin - Box Set 2 (2 disc set, featuring everything that didn't make it onto the first box set)
- Remasters (2 disc condensed compilation of the first 2 box sets)
- Complete Studio Recordings (10 disc set)
- Early Days (1 disc set covering the first 4 studio albums)
- Later Days (1 disc set covering the final 4 studio albums)
- Early Days/Later Days (both discs packaged together in one box sleeve)

... or for that matter, all of the remastered versions of their separate album releases, then in this day and age there's no reason you couldn't just make your own version, or an even better one suited to your personal taste. Other than that, absolutely no reason to pick this one up, other than to give it as a gift to someone.

Yes, but Encomium is a tribute album, and it was the decision of the artists who were covering the songs to pick which ones they were going to do. That being said, Big head Todd & the Monsters did a damn fine job of it, too.

I don't have a lot of Zeppelin, so I went out and got this.

In listening to it, I noticed that "Stairway to Heaven" fades out rather abruptly, to the point that Plant's final lyrics are barely audible (I can't even hear the final "...to heaven" at the end without cranking it up). Granted, while I remember the song being quieter at the end after rising to that wonderful crescendo, it's almost like someone is intentionally turning down the volume knob as that last verse is being sung. It's hard to describe, but it doesn't sound right, and I don't remember it sounding that way.

Can anyone help me on this? Didn't know if I had some sort of badly mixed copy. Thanks.

It has been remastered. In the CD booklet of Mothership it credits - Remastering: John Davis at Alchemy Mastering.

Previous remasters were done by Barry Diament or George Marino/Jimmy Page.

Yeah but....

The third disc listed in the Amazon product overview (click on "see all tracks") doesn't show all songs on disc 3 as "DVD" - so are there regular audio tracks mixed with dvd tracks on this disc? Or is that just wishful thinking on my end because they always leave out "In My Time of Dying" on these damn "greatest hits" releases?
