I think that the only difference between this release and the two thinpaks is the packaging. The two thinpaks are one of the very few thinpaks that kept all of the extras from the singles. I don't know if you plan on ordering it from Amazon, but you can get it at Rightstuf for $59.99($53.99 if you are a Got Anime member) until October 7. The coupon code is primetime.

This is not a repackaging of the thinpak discs. The twenty-six episodes have been re-authored onto five DVDs. The five DVDs come in a digipack that is inside a metal sphere.

If that's true that's ridiculous. They'd have to dump the extras and/or reduce the quality of the episodes.

Although amazon.com says it's a 10 disc set.

Gantz is only 26 episodes. That's five episodes per disc except for one with six episodes. That's a pretty normal TV episode to disc ratio.

Gantz only had 2-3 eps per disc on its 1st release & was spreed over 10 discs.
So putting them all on 5 disc's is cranking the compression..

The original release was spread across 10 discs for economical reasons, not technical ones. ADV wanted to see if fans would be more likely to pick up a series if it was released over more discs with a lower per-disc MSRP. (They ended their experiment with Gantz when they noticed that it had no significant impact on sales either way, but that the huge number of SKUs annoyed retailers.)

I just popped disc 1 of Gantz in and took a look - the episodes are roughly 1.15GB each.

So that's 5.75GB for the 5-episode discs and 6.9GB for the 6-episode disc out of the 8.5GB available on a DVD9. That leaves plenty of space for any extras that might include.
