What in tarnation is going on with Battlestar Galactica Season 3?

It's already out in the UK - hasn't even been announced for North America?

Anyone have any insight on this?

I've been wondering about this too. Then today I read over at TWOP that TV Guide is reporting Spring 08.

WTF?? I was late to the BSG party and just finished 2.5 a couple of months ago. I thought for sure S3 would come out in enough time to watch it before S4 aired. But I guess now I'll never get caught up to watching it on SciFi.

It makes no sense since, as you mentioned, it's already out in the UK. What possible reason could there be to miss the holiday shopping season when the DVDs are apparently finished?

Season 4 isn't starting until '08, so be prepared to wait a while.

Doesn't run in the UK until at least then either - but Season 3 is out on DVD there...

Then the correct answer is that Universal hates us.

I was wondering about this myself, I'm half way through season 2 and looking foward to seeing season 3. Pretty sad how it's released in UK already when filming is done here in Vancouver

I bet that Scifi will do a marathon of season 3 before season 4 premieres.

I'm pretty sure the DVDs have always been released first in the UK. I actually don't have a single R1 release for this show.

I was thinking that they were waiting till after the Emmy's in case they won some of the big awards (they only won for FX). If so, they could put "Emmy-winning" on all the packaging and promotional material, and might have been waiting for that.

There's also news that they're going to split the twenty eps of season four into two "seasons". First ten starting Feb of 2008, second ten starting Feb 2009. They apparently like the media exposure they get from having a critical darling, but they don't want to pony up the cash for two full seasons since it does so poorly in the Nielsons (though it sells like hotcakes on DVD and iTunes).

They're filming twenty episodes in a row, which Ron Moore is calling season 4. But the rocket scientists at scifi wanting to cut it into two sections, airing ten eps in 2008 and ten in 2009,to "amortize the costs" or something. Basically, they're just thinking of new ways to dick with BSG fans every day.

But they're hard at work to bring us the masterpiece that is Galactica 1980.

I just love the "The original Battlestar Galactica's Final Season" tagline.

Great, on top of that they're probably going to put S4 back on Friday night at 9pm est, then switch it over to Sunday night at - what time was that again, 10pm est, then they're going to switch the show again to Wednesday at 11:30pm est after the first five episodes are shown ... etc. etc.

How could you possibly establish a fan base with all the inconsistency .. and in the case of the DVD releases, delays, splitting seasons and so on?

Sci-Fi channel/Universal are run by monkeys, I swear. Dicking around with BSG fans, you say!??? Yeah, they're making an art form out of it.

Sorry for the OT rant but I just wish they could one aspect of the series down. Besides, I'm just a whore about the series I'll buy anything they give me anyway as discouraging as that is becoming to admit.

Bonnie Hammer at Sci Fi is much, much more than a monkey...

Ridiculous to mess with fans like this. Simple really I guess I dont need to get cable/scifi and will just wait two years before my next BG purchase.

The original miniseries and Season 1 came out in the UK first, mainly because that season was a co-production with the UK's SKY channel.
UK and the rest of region 2 got Season 2 quite a while after the two part releases of that season in the US, and it came with very few extras compared to the US releases.
Season 3 is out in R2 way earlier than the US ... but no word yet on when we in R2 are getting BSG: Razor though, or if the US release of S3 will have more extras.

Its pretty common to release the previous season DVD near the premier of a new season.

On the plus-side, the R2 dvds of season 3 haver almost no extras. I think R1 will at least get more extras.

I think since the next season is the last, they want to milk the last few seasons releases for as long as they can...hence, we'll get "Razor" and the HD DVD of Season 1 first, followed by Season 3 next year, then probably Seasons 2 and 3 on HD DVD sometime later in 2008, and then finally Season 4 in 2009.

I'm hoping they don't keep us waiting too late. My only one complaint in this movie is they use the word "frak" to much. They should replace it with "fuck" on the dvd releases. "Frak" sounds fucking stupid

I'm surprised they didn't go with "Prequel to the SciFi Channel's Smash Hit Series!"

From teh 'bits rumor mill:

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html#101707

In short, April 2008. No firm reason why, but...

[speculation]

The "Resistance" webisodes apparently were near full episode length before being cut up, plus there was apparently scads of footage shot that was part of the Sagittaron arc (lots of Boomer supposedly) but not shown...

... so my fervent hope is that they're taking the time to make a couple of "extra" episodes out of this footage, to make the S3 box an extra special event.

[/speculation]

That or they're just trying let Razor sell on it's own for a while.
