Lest we forget....

.... this is how das Monkey appositely introduced Part One some years ago:

I cannot stress enough the importance of keeping this thread clean. Please, no wink-wink posts of questionable content.

I'd like to think I have a pretty wide range of musical taste, but in our Clear Channel dominated radio culture (or Road Rules vs. Real World on TV), it's difficult to find new and interesting tunes. I often read the "Introduce Some Music to Everybody" type threads, but as I'm a lazy git, I don't end up following through without a link. So this thread's for links. New bands, new singles, old classics, whatever ... just so long as it's legal. It should be noted that the point of this isn't to create some massive database of all the music in the world, but simply to organize some of the favorites of forum members.

If there's enough interest, I'll try to keep an updated list at the top of the thread.

To get the ball rolling, I'll start with some random stuff I ran across in some recent recommendation/discussion threads around here.

the early 90's L.A. band Love/Hate has all 5 of their albums for download on their website...

http://www.lovehate.com/

best know for the songs "Why Do You Think They Call It Dope?" and "Blackout in the Redroom", lead singer Jizzy Pearl has been the replacement singer for Steven Pearcy in Ratt for the last 7 years... but Love Hate really doesn't sound much like Ratt at all.

The String Cheese Incident, a good jam band, has four free downloads at their site:

They change the songs every once in a while.

David Bowie - The Buddha of Suburbia

Taken from an email I received today:
This, Bowie's 19th studio album from 1993, is one of his personal favourites. The music differs significantly to the motif driven small pieces that he wrote for the TV mini series of the same name. Instead Bowie took lots of narrative provocation from Hanif Kureishi's novel and alongside his own personal reminiscences from the 1970's created a textural backdrop to create an amazing brand new album that is well worth discovering.

Listen to free tracks:

David Bowie 'Buddha of Suburbia': http://email.emicatalogue.com/a/tBG8...AIYAeQN9/link6
David Bowie 'Dead Against It': http://email.emicatalogue.com/a/tBG8...AIYAeQN9/link7

Watch the video!

Real (Hi-res): http://email.emicatalogue.com/a/tBG8...AIYAeQN9/link8
Real (Lo-res): http://email.emicatalogue.com/a/tBG8...AIYAeQN9/link9
Windows (Hi-res): http://email.emicatalogue.com/a/tBG8...IYAeQN9/link10

So there is audio and video.

I was alerted to this by a Tegan and Sara bulletin on Myspace... it's a free tribute album to REM's Automatic for the People. Sara (of Tegan & Sara) contributed a track, as well as Meat Puppets, Rogue Wave, and others.

Music Talk's running thread on neat bands and songs

Thankfully, bands and labels are coming around and now it's no longer necessary to introduce someone to a band through illegally hosted MP3s.

The idea here is that if you run across a cool song you like, share with us where we could hear it that's well, legal. Examples: band websites, label sites, Odeo, etc. Please, no links to zShare.

So, here is a song I've posted before elsewhere and my favorite song of this year, "A Punk" by Vampire Weekend.

<embed src="http://odeo.com/flash/audio_player_gray.swf" quality="high" width="322" height="54" name="odeo_player_gray" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="always" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashvars="type=audio&id=14797593" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" /></embed>
powered by ODEO

I also saw this band called Black Stoltzfus live last weekend. They were pretty good. I like the song "Your Advice" which you can hear here: http://www.myspace.com/mazarinband

(That song is actually a cover; another local Philly band did the original).

And my third one is "You! Me! Dancing!" by Los Campesinos. This is a link to their video (higher quality than what they put on YouTube):
http://hornetinc.com/youmedancing_fl...ing_flash.html

So, post away!

Well, here's a primer on Odeo. On the top left you can search for specific artist or song or you can browse.

1. Let's say you find something. We'll use this NPR broadcast of an Okkervill River concert as an example.
2. On the bottom right is a link that says "Embeddable Player"... click on that.
3. Then copy-and-paste the entire code on the right side of the player you want to pick. In this case, I'll pick the very first one, so the code I am copying is:
HTML Code:
<embed src="http://odeo.com/flash/audio_player_midsize_gray.swf" quality="high" width="150" height="60" name="audio_player_midsize_gray" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="always" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashvars="audio_id=16973663&audio_duration=7123.3&valid_sample_rate=true&external_url=http://podcastdownload.npr.org/anon.npr-podcasts/podcast/510019/14973151/npr_14973151.mp3" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" /></embed><a style="font-size: 9px; padding-left: 37px; color: #f39; letter-spacing: -1px; text-decoration: none" href="http://odeo.com/audio/16973663/view">powered by <strong>ODEO</strong></a>
4. Paste the code you just copied into your post:
<embed src="http://odeo.com/flash/audio_player_midsize_gray.swf" quality="high" width="150" height="60" name="audio_player_midsize_gray" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="always" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashvars="audio_id=16973663&audio_duration=7123.3&valid_sample_rate=true&external_url=http://podcastdownload.npr.org/anon.npr-podcasts/podcast/510019/14973151/npr_14973151.mp3" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" /></embed>
powered by ODEO

5. Bingo!

There's also the link posted in this thread to a set of free songs from the iTunes store. You must have an iTunes account to download these songs.

It is streaming but comprises a whole album!

Bitter & Twisted is the band’s debut album - and what an album it is… It’s not easy to describe the style, but you can recognize many sounds from the members’ previous bands. There’s some classic rock, punk, blues and psychedelic rock… The album is amazingly versatile, but whatever you call it, it’s loud!

The energetic punky rocker ‘Cannonball’ kicks off the album in spectacular fashion. ‘Rocky Road’ has that punky attitude as well, and the Celtic flavour in this song (à la THIN LIZZY/GARY MOORE) and the tribal rhythm are highly appreciated – in fact, this song sounds like a heavy version of ADAM & THE ANTS. Other great songs are the psychedelic ‘Miss The Buzz’, the moody, bluesy ‘Down To Here’ (with an amazing guitar solo) and the brilliant closer ‘Vincenzo’, a laughing-out-loud track which reminds me a bit of GILLAN’s ‘No Laughing In Heaven’.

As a guitarist, Bernie Tormé can’t be equalled, and his playing gells perfectly with McCoy’s thundering bass and Guy’s heavy drumming. These guys really have a thing going. You might argue that Tormé isn’t much of a singer, but then his raw vocals are exactly what this music asks for. I’ve been enjoying this album much more than I expected… it’s been in my cd player for several weeks now and I just can’t get enough. Raw, rough, rocking… if that’s what you’re looking for in your music, GMT delivers. Fantastic album!
A career spanning interview with Tormé & McCoy hereGillan & Ozzy fans might also find some snippets of interest....

Thanks! I havne't listened to it yet, but the discs are burning as I type. Have you listened to any of it?

edit: It isn't bad. A bit slow... even though the original album is generally slow... this was slower. I liked several of the tracks though.
