BIG LOVE: Season 2 (12/11/07) (HBO finally gives us resonable prices!!!)

tvshowsondvd.com reports the following:

"Big Love - The Complete 2nd Season is coming to DVD in just a few months. We've got the jump on HBO Home Video's formal announcement, with word of a December 11th planned release date. The first season set came out almost a year ago, at a $99.99 SRP. This time, HBO brings the price down significantly, with a list price of $59.99 for 12 hour-long episodes. Our friends in the biz have provided us with a small, early look at the box art (subject to change), and a studio description of the set:

Big Love - The Complete 2nd Season early box art thumbnail
The critically acclaimed hit series, Big Love, returns for its second break-out season. Bill Henrickson works hard and plays by the rules. All he wants in return is a happy, secure, normal life for his family. Is that too much to ask? Maybe so. For a polygamist like Bill, the American Dream comes with strings attached.

Features the all star cast of Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sveigny, Ginnifer Goodwin, Harry Dean Stanton and Bruce Dern, Executive Produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman"

It's good to see HBO wake the f*ck up after charging obscene prices for most of their original dramatic series.
Also they report the 4th season of the wire will also be $59.98.

HBO gives reasonable prices if you buy them on the first week.

Hopefully this means that earlier seasons of The Wire will be on sale when season 4 comes out.

Whoa, I'm kinda in shock! I remember having to plan out purchasing HBO DVDs with Costco Coupons, etc. Hopefully this will be standard practice from now on! Any word on season one getting a price drop?

is big love not doing well in the ratings? i'm assuming they're trying to get people to buy the season sets and attract new viewers at a lower price. maybe i'm just a pessimist, but i doubt we'll see something like sopranos at that msrp. it would be awesome if hbo realized their prices are pretty extreme and did this for all future releases though. thanks for the info.

Actually, season two was up almost 30% in the ratings from season 2 (from what I've been reading)...

Wow. I'd be nice if this became standard practice for all future HBO releases.

It's like they know what a great season of a great show this was (I'd say it was as good as one of the better seasons of Sopranos), and they just want it to get out there - kinda like what Universal did with Friday Night Lights.

That's not HBO. That's the retailers knocking 30% off the suggested retail price of $99.99.

So it might seem like 65-75 is a good deal on the first week... but every single retailer does it for a new release...

So in retrospect, you can get a show with a suggested retail price of $59.99 on release day for 35-40 bucks... and those typically have twice as much content as the HBO releases.

HBO is finally realizing that while they are a premium channel they might actually sell more units if they lower the price.

This has me looking at season 1 and thinking "Well... season 2 will be a low price..." I would never have considered buying either season at $65 or more.

Ratings for Big Love aren't amazing (2-2.5 million average?), but they're the highest rated hourlong the network has at this point, I think.

They're happy it's not doing John From Cincinnati numbers (they canceled that several weeks ago). And like others have said, they're up from season 1. That's a good thing.

I remember Big Love being discounted to $49.99 for what seemed like forever at FYE...and their sale prices usually stink, so it had to be HBO's decision. \

So John from Cincinnatti got canceled? Does this mean the return of Deadwood?

not to get off topic, but word is that Deadwood movies might still not happen because of A) budget constraints B) getting the cast together will be very difficult.

.and their sale prices usually stink, so it had to be HBO's decision.
Seems like it, but typically when a retailer buys products from a distributer the distributer has no control over the price it is sold at (other than a suggested retail price) I don't know if DVD/CD type media is under control of the distributer. It might be a different situation.

Example, a lot of places seem to offer various FOX shows on sale at the same time, which would seem like a weird coincidence.

I would have lept on Big Love had it not been for the steep price. This considerably lower price has me reconsidering it.

I loved season one (I rented it) and would consider buying it, but I wonder if they will have any bundle deals for the two seasons when 2 comes out/
