Low numbers all around but I’m sad that Death Sentence tanked, it looked like it had some potential. Hopefully DVD sales will fair better. I fully expected Halloween taking the #1 spot at the Box Office. I know it’s received some pretty awful reviews but naturally being the ‘see it for myself’, person that I am, I’ll be buying it (along with Death Sentence) on DVD.

The summer is officially over.

I haven't seen the theatrical cut of Halloween yet, so I won't say whether or not I'm glad it's going to be tops. Shame for Death Sentence though, I saw it last night and thought it was a lot of fun, if not very believeable.

I wonder if Halloween would have done better if it opened in mid to late october...
I am sure it doesn't even matter cause its doing so good but it might have been able to pull in even more, at least in opening weekend, if released then...
Looks like MGM/Weinstien finally have another hit....

Was there a lot of publicity for Death Sentence?? I would think I would be in the movie's target audience but I didnt even know it was coming out until I saw a review of it at another board.

For some reason I thought Death Sentence was last week.

To be honest, "from the director of Saw" is not how you get me to see a movie.

Halloween comes early, but it's like opening your bag after trick or treating and finding you got nothing but toothpaste and candy corn.

I went and saw Superbad this weekend. I wasn't as impressed with it as some people clearly were, but it was probably a far better choice than anything opening this weekend. Now bring on 3:10 to Yuma.

I'm really glad that Halloween is doing well so far.

I know almost nothing about Death Sentence but I kinda wanted to see it. I never saw a trailer but I did see the poster and thought it looked really cool. I was thinking about going and seeing it with almost no knowledge and having a completey fresh experience. And then I saw "from the director of Saw" and I thought, well maybe not.

How exactly do you figure an 11 million dollar Friday on a 3-day weekend equals a low 20 million dollar opening? This is definitely exceeding expectations, and is on track to be the biggest labor day weekend opening to date.

Halloween's sucess so far kind of blows away Eli Roth's theory that Hostel 2 bombed because the workprint was leaked, as well as the declairation that the hardcore horror genre is dead.

Well we'll find out shortly, but it's actually been the pattern as of late that often a movie will drop from its Friday opening...that seems especially true for sequels, and ones with poor reviews. Not really sure why, maybe core audience is there the first day. The Simpsons for example, did $30 million on Friday, and dropped to $23 million on Saturday.

And then we should see a further drop on Sunday. Also, iirc, Labor Day not a huge movie day since it is a travel day, and also because it is a school night, lol. So, I don't think you can multiply friday's box office by 4 to get the totals, but as I said, we'll find out shortly.

I would agree that it is doing better than expectations though, probably will end up in the mid to high 20s.

I don't think $30MM for the extended weekend is out of the question. Too bad it doesn't deserve its success.

Glad to see Stardust is at least *sort of* hanging in there with only a 22.3 percent drop.
