Question about OTA broadcast of Smallville

I was unable to watch OTA HDTV version of Smallville last week so I Tivo'd the standard version. What was disturbing was how the HD filming wasn't presented letterboxed at all - in the opening credits have of the names where chopped off by the edge of the screen! My question is - is this show normally show letterboxed during its initial run in standard definition or is it always like that? I was playing catch up by watching the DVDs and watching S6 during repeats on my HDTV so last week was my first truly standard viewing of the show.

If it is always cutting stuff off like that, I'll have yet another show I need to stay home to watch come next season until I can get the new S3 Tivo to record HD over the air!!!
