From Troma

“DVD titles to be promoted at Comic-Con: Toxic Avenger Box Set and Cannibal the Musical 11th Anniversary Edition

Marketing techniques: “For Tromeo, which we promoted at least year’s Comic-Con, we promoted with exclusive his/her temporary tattoos; for Ultimate Toxic Avenger and Cannibal, we have trailers on a special ‘Sneak Beak’ DVD for our upcoming theatrical release Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead,” says Jeremy Howell, Troma sales and operations VP.

The value of Comic-Con for DVD marketing: “Comic-Con is very important as it allows us to directly reach our core demographic in an atmosphere where an independent can have almost as much exposure as a major studio.”

Advice for DVD retailers hoping to capitalize on Comic-Con’s popularity: “Be creative!”

From the Weinsteins

SDCC 07: Genius/Weinstein Tout DVD Plans
Look-alikes and characters to appear from Grindhouse.
by IGN Staff
July 24, 2007 - Genius Products and The Weinstein Company will be hitting San Diego Comic-Con later this week to promote several of their upcoming DVD releases, and to aid in that endeavor they will be bringing several memorable characters from their films to the con. These will include:

- A Cherry Darling look-alike, based on the character played by Rose McGowan from Robert Rodriguez's film Planet Terror

- Sydney Tamiia Poitier, who played Jungle Julia from Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof

- Machete's Danny Trejo, the Mexican bent on revenge, as seen in the Grindhouse trailers and starring in Robert Rodriguez's upcoming film of the same name

In addition to the Grindhouse films Death Proof and Planet Terror, the Dragon Dynasty label will also be in evidence at the Genius/Weinstein booth in the form of classics like John Woo's Hard Boiled and Last Hurrah for Chivalry and Jackie Chan's Crime Story.

Also on display will be titles from the brand new Dimension Extreme label which features "edgy and provocative programming [with titles including] Dirty Sanchez, the repulsive and completely disgusting comedy based on the MTV Europe series, DOA: Dead or Alive, based on the successful videogame franchise, as well as the highly anticipated horror flicks Black Sheep, Broken, Automaton Transfusion, and Buried Alive!"

Check out the Genius Products/The Weinstein Company booth (#4039) throughout the convention. Cherry Darling will meet-and-greet fans daily; autograph and meet-and-greet sessions are as follows:

Thursday, July 26th
2:00pm - 4:00pm (Sydney Tamiia Poitier)

Friday, July 27th
2:00pm - 4:00pm (Danny Trejo)

I will appreciate any information regarding the Twin Peaks: Complete Series Box Set discussion scheduled for tomorrow. Especially if it will contain the pilot episode and the what bonus features are we to expect on the set.

Thanks in advance.

Cool.. thanks for posting that.

The big DVD news will be the panel for Blade Runner. I can't wait for that.

I didn't actually see the display yet, but I was told there's a booth that's talking about a new release of Close Encounters of the Third Kind that'll have both versions.

Interesting. I have the 2-Disc version, but I'd like to see an edition released with the theatrical cut on it.

Maybe seamless branching could be used to be able to include all the various cuts of the movie throughout the years....

Actually at the Sony booth, there's a poster for a 3-disc Close Encounters with all three versions included: Theatrical Cut, Special Edition and Collector's Edition, available this fall on Blu-Ray and standard DVD. Is this the first Spielberg title on Blu-Ray?

But yes, the big news on Thursday will be Blade Runner and Twin Peaks.

This rumour was posted over at Digital Bits today:
Now then... one other quick note this morning: The midi-chlorians are a-buzz today with word of a possible surprise DVD announcement from Lucasfilm at Comic-Con this weekend. This is certainly Rumor Mill-worthy and it remains to be seen how things will play out, but that's what we're hearing this morning here in San Diego. So keep your eyes and ears peeled for breaking news from the con. Wouldn't it be interesting if, after all the denials, Lucasfilm decided to release that ultimate Star Wars Saga DVD box set this year after all? We'll see...

I could care less about yet another Star Wars release and could care even less about the digital bits.

Sorry for the rant but I have been wanting to get that off my chest for a long time.

My gripe about the bits is the all out shift to HD-DVD talk with DVD as an afterthought. I feel like I've been passed by.

It's probably going to be the official announcement for the Young Indy DVDs.

You are not the only one. I feel the same way too considering that still a "niche" market so far.

Hey Everybody,

Just got back from another exhausting day and brought some movie/DVD related news & 'rumors' back with me.

Oldboy coming to Blu Ray - October 23rd.

When asking one of the representatives from Tartan about their plans for Blu Ray/HDDVD I was told that there are only plans (currently) to release this on Blu Ray. Depending on how well it's received (IE: How many of us buy it) will determine if we get more from them after this.

Deathproof and Planet Terror cover art!

Both are 2 disc sets - best buy will be carrying an exclusive metal tin edition of each movie.. the tin will also include "an extra not found on the normal dvds":

When asked if they plan to release it on HDDVD or Blu Ray.. "We plan to put it on blu ray later this year" - likely a simple error, but worth noting.

Dead or Alive coverart:

And if you're curious as to what the "Cherry Darling Look-Alike" actually looks like:

I sure hope they're paying her well! She seemed to be out there most of the day (and will be for the next few days). Considering her boot, the gun prosthetic leg, the fact she's up on a platform a few feet high and having people taking pictures with her (difficult due to the raised platform, it seems she's been bending down and going down to their level). I had enough trouble standing on the ground in normal shoes!

Do you know if there'll be DTS tracks on the Grindhouse films?

I didn't get any other details unfortunately

I'm going back through Sunday so I'll try to gather some more information at that time. Any other questions you had for me to ask (to any of the studios at the show)?

EDIT: For anybody interested, I've uploaded a few of my photos from today. I was restricted with my camera (a DSLR with Telephoto lens and a point and shoot with poor low-light performance) so I did my best to make them work - hoping for better results over the next few days.

Thanks for the pics!

The BB exclusives Tin packaging look great especially with the theatrical one sheet on it.

They look like a Steelbook to me than a Tin

You're correct - the tin was my term/my error ("Steelbook" just couldn't come to mind at the time of posting it).

I really like the Death Proof one but I'm undecided on the Planet Terror. Cherry Darling's one of my favorite characters.. but that image has been a little overused and the standard DVD art actually looks quite nice to me.

I gotta agree. I think the DVD art is pretty cool and the Cherry steelbook is OK, but they should have used the international art for both

and included the mention of the Palm D'or nom on the DP steelbook.

I'm drooling over the BB exclusive steelbooks, but I'd rather have both of them on HD DVD.

Is the chick in the pictures from CC really missing a leg? It looks like it, she does a great job keeping in shape, considering she probably cannot run.

Any word if the fake trailers would be included in either of the two dvds? I just read at IGN that none of the faux trailers are going to be included:
