Especially since there is an HD master from when it aired on one of the HD channels.

with Paramount now licensing titles out to Criterion, we may yet get a release of Mr Goodbar. The current regime at Parmaount isn't high on catalog titles, unless it's releasing previous discs in gussied up versions so I wouldn't expect it from them. I've heard the music rights might be a problem too.

1492 is also Parmount, so Criterion might be able to get it hands on that one as well.

Far From The Madding Crowd, iirc, is due out next year.

Warner previously said that Under The Rainbow might make it out this year, but it sure looks iffy now. Supposedly they also have a remastered version of Arthur ready to go too- maybe these could be part of the same '80s comedies' promotion at some point?

I was about to mention the mystifying lack of an "El Cid" release (Academy Award nominated, Charleton Heston, Sophia Loren epic). Then on a lark I did a search and it looks like "The Miriam Collection" is going to release it. This is the last film left on my original want list that I put together when I started into DVD.

El Norte.

Sympathetic to illegal immigrants and distributed by 20th Century Fox- which is owned by Rupert Murdoch.

Oh yeah. I'm sure they'll release it real soon.

Catalogue titles aren't big sellers so there is rarely a big rush to get older movies out on DVD. For films that there is a demonstrable demand for, the two main reasons that they aren't out on DVD are rights issues and print quality. If a movie like African Queen or El Cid is released on DVD, viewers will and should expect a good quality print. If the original elements have deteriorated, there's nothing that can be done short of extremely expensive and time consuming restoration. Unless someone wants to spend the time or money, that won't happen.

Print deterioration is an ongoing process which has actually caught up to some movies between VHS and DVD release. You can watch pretty good full length versions of It's a Mad, Mad World and John Wayne's The Alamo on VHS tape (I have them both). However, the only DVD versions we are ever likely to get are the short versions because the additional scenes are in very bad shape (you can see some of them on the Mad World DVD and realize just how grungy they would have looked stuck in the middle of the movie).

Night of the Grizzly with Clint Walker!

That way I won't have to pay $20-$30 for a VHS copy on ebay only to have the DVD come out the next week or something!
