LUST, CAUTION (Ang Lee) - 9/28

They used to have this trailer on the Focus website, but it's been removed for some strange reason.

But anyhoo, here's the trailer for Ang Lee's new film, Lust, Caution:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wRiIpQHmlg

And I gotta say, if that is some of Alexandre Desplat's score for the film that they're using for the trailer, he will WIN the Oscar for Score.

As for the film itself, this only confirms my opinion that it is impossible for Ang Lee to make a bad movie.

As of now, I'm predicting it for:

Adapted Screenplay
Foreign-Language Feature
Cinematography
Art Direction
Original Score

I guess I should just assume that you haven't seen The Hulk.

This looks very good. Alexandre Desplat is a genius. I love his soundtrack for Syriana.

On the surface, the plot seems quite similar to Black Book, but I really like the era this is set in, and I'm a long-time fan of Ang's films and will watch absolutely anything with Tony Leung so count me in.

I said bad, not incredibly flawed (which The Hulk was).

I've grown to appreciate cinematography more and more in films, and Prieto is amongst the best presently. I loved Brokeback Mountain so may check this out.

whoa...didn't expect this to come out so soon!
it's coming out on the same day in Southeast Asia, isn't it?

and will Leehom Wang sing the theme song to this movie? he's actually a pretty good singer despite his popstar looks.

And Lust, Caution is... NC-17?!?!?!

ANN LEE'S FILM GETS NC-17 RATING

The MPAA thinks Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution" has too much lust, and they're cautioning moviegoers by branding it with an NC-17 rating.

Distributor Focus Features says it won't edit Lee's follow-up to the Oscar-winning "Brokeback Mountain," or try to appeal the no-one-under-17-admitted rating, creating potential distribution problems for its new awards season contender.

"Lust" follows a young Chinese woman in Japanese-occupied Shanghai during World War II who becomes the center of a plot to seduce and kill a married enemy collaborator. The trailer for the subtitled Chinese language film shows lead actors Tony Leung and Tang Wei in various states of writhing passion.

The Motion Picture Association of America ratings board cited the film's graphic sexuality for its decision. A Focus source said there were too many sex scenes violating the rating's board's unwritten rules (such as the number of allowable pelvic thrusts, for example) to make an appeal possible.

Sources who have seen the film say it contains at least three scenes, one a long montage, featuring multiple acts of aggressive sexual activity in different positions. There's no full-frontal male nudity (the source of some NC-17 rulings when shown in sex scenes), but male-on-female oral sex, non-S&M restraints and several non-traditional sexual positions are seen, conveying the anger and aggression of the main characters. When asked if anyone was shown, say, upside down, one viewer replied "it depends on where you're standing. They're very flexible."

I was wondering what barrier Ang Lee would go after this time, after his last two arthouse flicks became massive hits (CTHD, Brokeback). And NC-17 is just the thing he needs.

Just saw the trailer for this last weekend. Extremely excited to see this since I'm a big Tony Leung fan.

A theater in San Francisco is getting this movie on the 5th of October, so I'll probably catch it then.

I like the look of this movie. Reminds me of the excellent film, "In the Mood for Love" starring Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung.

Definitely looking forward to this. From what I've heard so far, it's pretty darn good but drags in parts.

Yeah, from the looks of it I have a feeling that it's going to be very "In the Mood For Love." Meaning that the pace is very tepid, and overall aesthetic style is supposed to suck you in and support the film in places.

from my point of view, I hope it's a tad better than 'In the Mood for Love' that movie didn't impress me, even though it was highly raved about.
