Good movies that lose steam towards the end?
I actually got around to watching a few dvds today and two of the movies I watched started out great in the 1st half but start to drag a bit in the second half. The movies:
Dog Day Afternoon - Very good movie throughout, but the second hour drags a bit for me.
Die Hard 3 - I love the first 45 mins. It's a good mix of action and comedy. But after that it slows down quite a bit.
Any movies you feel this way about?

Totally agree about Fight Club. For me, the magic of that movie is the clever social satire/commentary in the first hour. The terrorism stuff doesn't interest me at all.
The Philadelphia Story was brilliant until 90% through but got sloppy at the end. Still a great movie.
EDIT: Oh yeah, a recent example is Knocked Up. It really dragged toward the end.

I would have to argue that the recent John Cusack entry into the world of cinema known as 1408 is a definitive example of the original poster's intent.
Another recent example, for me, would have to be that of Knocked Up. While an incredibly well done movie, it somewhat loses steam during the last bit. It lightens up on that which is hilarious in order to present itself in a more heartfelt manner, but I personally believe it should have continued with "the funny." It is possible to be both humorous and thoughtful at the same time.
That is all. Until I think of more. At which point it will not be all.

"Last Action Hero" is a really great satire on Ah-nuld, his movies, and action movies in general...but it loses a lot of energy when going to the real world.
The satire is somewhat there, but it's not nearly as golden as anything happening "in the movie".

Just a few recently: Zodiac, Planet Terror, Flags Of Our Fathers.
Planet Terror doesn't so much as lose steam as gain so much it becomes unbearable and achieves the opposite effect.

Dunno if you were being serious or facetious about FMJ, DeputyDave, but nonetheless:
Am I the only one who gets annoyed when people say the "second half" of FMJ loses steam from the "first half?" Heck, I even get annoyed when people like to break them up into halves. It's a complete movie, and they are inseparable and dependent on one another.

I'm not bashing Zodiac. It's a great film, but the last 90 minutes doesn't maintain the momentum of the first hour. If that 90 minutes were tightened up to around 60 with better editing, it could have been IMO the best film of the year.
And I, too, am baffled at the mentions of Fight Club here.
