What is the Best Sergio Leone Film?

I know which one I'm picking, but I'm interested to see what everyone else picks.

Leone made some great films. He was clearly a big influence on Clint Eastwood.

I do love the Man With No Name trilogy, but I'd have to go with Once Upon a Time in West as my number 1.

I know - I don't think anyone would have voted for it, and it just came out on DVD so hardly anyone has seen it anyway.

Maybe next time...

tie

While I do put Duck, You Sucker at the bottom, it is still a very good movie - clearly showing Leone's stamp all over it.

For a Few Dollars More

I blind bought Once Upon a Time in the West and thought it was incredibly boring. I guess I'll have to watch it again.

It's a tad slow - but the atmosphere and cinematography are incredible! And the performances in the film are fantastic! Leone intentionally went with a script short on dialogue and long on atmosphere. He let the actors facial expressions and body language do a lot of the talking, which was a very bold, courageous choice. I think it paid off in spades!

Go back and watch it for the subtle things about the actors performances - and the cinematography. The story is actually quite strong and allows for this type of presentation.

Henry Fonda is amazing Once Upon a Time in the West. That must have been a shock back in the day to see him in such a role. It was a shock to me.

Once Upon a Time in West is boring.
Which I blame on Bronson's performance.
Had it been Clint in the role it would have been a way better movie.

For me:
1. ...America (although Noodles is truly repugnant and the second half isn't quite as good as the first half)
2. GBU (which is 20 minutes too long...I'm just not sure which 20 minutes)
3. ...West (which features Frank teleporting and participating in a love scene that makes absolutely no sense)
4. Everything else lagging behind.

They're all great, but have some serious flaws. Having said that, Leone is so excellently, outrageously over-the-top with his camera, the flaws don't really matter at all.

My ranking

1. Once Upon a Time in the West
2. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly (but really close to 1)
3. For a Few Dollars More (also really close)
4. A Fistful of Dollars
5. Once Upon a Time in America (quite a bit below the first four)
6. Duck, You Sucker!

Once Upon a Time in the West. Bronson is my favorite actor and that film is just so goddamn intense that the final shootout is instantly one of the greatest duels in cinematic history.

Re: What is the Best Sergio Leone Film?

So is this a good order to watch these movies? Obviously, Dollars trilogy in order, but the others. This is how I have it now. From top to bottom is how I was gonna watch...
