Need some TV buying advice please

Hello all,

Currently I have a Toshiba 65" RPTV. However, I am moving my media stuff soon and with it, I want to get a new, less bulky TV. My budget is around $2500. I have been looking at DLP, Plasma, and LCD's. Here are my concerns....

** I am hesitant to go smaller with screen size. I will be sitting 11-13' away from the screen.

** In an ideal world, I think I want to get a plasma, but I think that the biggest plasma I could get for that money would be a 58" and as I said in point #1, I'm not sure.

I play Xbox occasionally but not too much. In the next 6 months or so I will upgrade to either/both NDDVD/Blu ray.

I have heard great things about the Panasonic plasmas, but I don't know if the screen size will be what i want.

How old is your 65" RPTV. Because if it's more than 4 years old, you might just get another one (which should have better technology and image) if the size is your main concern.

i don't know if i understand the question exactly, but if you are talking about room lighting, there are a couple of flourescent lights in the room but that is it other than a lamp. there are absolutely no windows or sunlight.

my current tv is 4 1/2 years old. i was thinking of one of the DLP models that are still sort of big but not as bulky, since i don't think a 65" plasma/lcd will be in my budget.

You might checkout some 58" plasmas in person at a local A/V store and see if it's worth the 7-inch reduction.

I'm going to take a wild guess and suggest where Spiky was headed. Course I could be wrong....

If you have good light control, want something 65" or bigger, HD and for that budget, have you considered a front projector?

You can get a very nice HD projector for $1,500 or less, buy a good screen a few hundred (or make you own for around $125-$150) and even with longer cables, projector mount, you are well under budget and are looking at 100" screen!

my future brother in law was telling me about a front projector, but he was saying that his non-HD stuff looked pretty bad. i watch a good deal of non-HD tv in addition to the movies so that is a concern.

I picked up a 60" Sony 60A2020 which is pretty nice. Was able to get it well under your $2500 budget also.

Depends. Mainly on your source. Have a terrible SD source like Dishnetwork and yea, it looks bad. Just like it looks bad on your current set. Have decent SD like a decent DVDp/upconverting DVD player or even OTA TV, then it will look good...mind certainly does.

SD looks just fine on my Panny PJ from DirecTV, which isn't a great source. Didn't look as good when I had a BenQ. It depends on the internals of your equipment, too.

Certain channels don't look good, but then, they don't look good on my 20" SDTV, either.
