Compare the two Phantasm dvd relases for me.

I have the earlier Phantasm dvd release but is the new Anchor Bay release supposed to be better? The specs seem to be the same according to Amazon. So why should I get the new Anchor Bay release when I already have the original release which seems to be the same thing? This has been eating away at me ever since the new release came out. If the new release is better quality i'll get it but as of yet I haven't seen it to be better. What's your opinion.

The AB Edition is Anamorphic Widescreen and has a DTS track. There may be other improvements as well, I'm not sure.

the new release is anamorphic, but is also filled with artifacts like line line twitter and aliasing/moire. The old version was difficult to watch on a large 16:9. The new AB version looks like they just took the old 4:3 LBX master and upconverted it digitally instead of striking a whole new master (don't know that this was done, but I wouldn't be surprised given the nature of some of the artifacting). So ultimately, it really isn't a whole lot better.

A big disappointment for me.

MGM is looking the best to me out of those, glad I didn't upgrade (I really have a very high requirement for additional features to warrant upgrades anyway.)

DVDcompare.net can be a good resource for comparisons, but there is not a lot of R1 on this one:

MGM release also features original mono mix, while the AB releases do not. And the mono mix sounds better than the 5.1 on the MGM release.
