Good U.S. artists not from NY or California?

I was going through my iTunes collection and I noticed most of the US bands I listen to are either from NY or Cal.

The only artists that I know where they are from and in my collection are Mudvayne (Peoria, IL - I think) and Frank Sinatra (NJ). Mudvayne, in my opinion is an okay band, with a great bass player.

What are other good bands are out there not from Cal or NY?

California bands in my collection:
A Perfect Circle, Tool, Faith No More, Metallica, Megadeth, Primus, Les Claypool, Mike Patton side projects, Pennywise, Common Rider, Operation Ivy, GNR, Motley Crue (I like their 1st two albums), Swingin' Utters, and many more

NY:
10,000 Maniacs/Natalie Merchant, Anthrax, Cyndi Lauper, Billy Joel, Ramones, etc.

Just good? Or great?

Seattle, Detroit, Minneapolis, Washington DC, & Boston have scenes that rival any in the world. Chicago's up there too.

Off the top of my head, try the Supersuckers, Soul Asylum, Husker Du, Paul Westerberg/The Replacements, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Melvins (I guess they can be considered a CA band though), Upper Crust, The Bags, Dillinger Four, early Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Drive By Truckers, Down, Crowbar, Corrosion of Conformity, White Stripes, Sonic's Rendezvous Band, MC5, The Stooges, Alabama Thunderpussy, Throttlerod, Ann Beretta, Boston, Candy Snatchers, Daniel Johnston, Dropkick Murphys, Electric Frankenstein, Foo Fighters, Hayseed Dixie, Less Than Jake, Minor Threat, Molly Hatchet, New Bomb Turks, Poison Idea, Sugar, The Pixies, Fig Dish, The Fluid, The Real Kids, Avail, Trouble...

The Queers, Methadones, Screeching Weasel, & tons of other bands worship at the altar of the Ramones.

I'm going to go with R.E.M. from Athens, Black Crowes from Atlanta, Allman Brothers from Macon (I think), Tom Petty from Florida, Dave Matthews from Charlottesville, The Shins from Albequerque, Jump from the Carolinas, Carbon Leaf from Richmond, 311 from Nebraska, and I'm positive there are others that I have missed. Those just jump out as "good" bands from places other than NY or Cali.

Arcade Fire. They only have an album of the year, serious contenders for another album of the year this year, and been named best live band.

Win isn't Canadian. Neither is Regine. And obviously neither is William War III.

So, to proclaim that AF "are Canadian" borders on ignorant.

Just saying.

This has never really crossed my mind. The list would be very long because NY and LA don't have any type of monopoly on great bands.
