The Long Kiss Goodnight 2!?

Here

It's funny considering I just bought this DVD for $5 at CC last week, and I'm all for a sequel to a movie not many saw written by Shane Black. As much as a fifth Lethal Weapon with a mulleted Mel Gibson redeeming his bizarro behavior for the past few years would be great with Rocky, Die Hard, and Rambo (plus a potential Beverly Hills Cop sequel) all getting new installments, I hope this happens. I'm sure even if the original film, while not bad at all, did underwhelmingly at the box office, people will still see this for Samuel L. Jackson (who IMO just gave his best performance since Pulp Fiction with Black Snake Moan). And whatever you do, get this fucker made with the Shane Black-friendly hard-as-rocks R rating.

Then, hopefully, development can begin on The Last Boy Scout 2. That would be so asskicking.

Years ago I would have been psyched about a sequel but IMO it seems too much time has passed. They should have made a movie spin-off for the characher SLJ playeyed when the movie was still fresh.

Really? I never knew that. However, I hadn't seen this before until recently, so I wasn't that aware of it. I only rented it because I'm a huge fan of Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, but that's comforting to know. With the exception of it being inducted as a CHUD.com Essential I was oblivious to its popularity.

I think New Line, the studio that made the original, would be go for any picture with a willing and ready star/director that could be made for reasonably cheap -- I see no reason this film should cost more than $20-$30m.

I love the first film, but seriously, why a sequel now?

But don’t expect a reunion with Ms. Davis, Jackson cautioned. While she was the star of the first film, the sequel will have a fresher, and in many ways, much more sinister, female protagonist.
Translation: she's too old.

Every time I think Hollywood has reached the bottom of the barrel when it comes to story ideas, they find a secret compartment where someone's hidden ideas with even less quality and imagination.

I guess I'll spoilerize this little plot detail just to be safe:

Spoiler:
“Actually, we’re thinking, you know, the little girl [Samantha’s daughter, Caitlin] is grown up now and possibly got some skills passed onto her by her mom,” Jackson said of the film’s plot. “Her mom gets killed and we want to find out who did it.”

Sigh. I hate sequels that do this.

Reminds me of
Spoiler:
Alien 3. Or, come to think of it, another sequel where Geena Davis' character died at the very beginning - Fly 2!

Davis won't be back. She and Harlin divorced in 1998 and not very amicably.

Huge fan of the film but it's been far too long for this to be brought up.

They would of had better luck making no reference to the first movie and just stealing the concept of the first movie as background info for the new character. It may just be better for people to be reminded of the first film simply by seeing seeing similarities in this "all new & original movie idea".

Slapping a number two on a movie doesn't always mean the people who saw the first will be back.

I'm sure that's the only reason.

It didn't do very poorly, although not the hit they might have expected. It made 33 million in the US and 90 million worldwide back in 1996.

Oh Seantn, you know foreign people don't count. It was a massive flop, just like Waterworld and The Island.

You're right DonnachaOne, foreign people don't count! And not just when it comes to the box office.

Second-run theater though. Remember those?

I always call it "the dollar theater". But now it's more like the 2 or 3 dollar theater, which is still a good deal, now that it's 10 bucks for first run shows.
