Yet another week with depressing numbers....
I cant believe people watch that Shrek shit....The only thing I can say good about Shrek is that the soundtrack for Shrek 2 is really good...
Sad to see 28 weeks later is bombing. That was a good movie. Oh well, I think I should have learned by now that the mass of ignorant uninformed dumbasses that populate the megaplexes each week have no taste and would rather pay to watch a cartoon than a good movie...

Lower than I expected for Shrek but it should be enormous on the weekend, especially Saturday.
Shame 28 Weeks Later... isn't doing better, I would like to see a 28 Months Later with the same creativity afforded to the first two.

Did you take your children to see 28 Weeks Later?
Shrek is great and I hope everybody goes and see's it. Can't wait for it to hit the DVD.

However, my thoughts on Shrek the Third have been posted in the review thread for the flick. It's easily the worst out of the three because it has not a single fucking thing going for it. And that's a hard feat to accomplish considering the status of the first two. Easily the worst film to come out this year -- which is another feat as 2007 has just been a trainwreck for cinema.
I'll bet some hard cash that Shrek will have a $50 million (plus) day today, but sadly, there's no accounting for taste some of the time when it comes to the box office.
Spider-man 3 dropping at a rapid, alarming rate?
28 Weeks Later taking a massive hit?
At least Disturbia and Hot Fuzz are still hanging on. Those are the only four watchable films currently sitting in the top ten.

When Shrek came out in 2001, I didn't know what it is and thought the preview looked terrible. I ended up seeing it twice in theaters and it was extremely funny and visually stunning and it was great.
The sequel was not so great. The sequel was a weak retread of the original until the third act when it picked up a little. The villains (especially Jennifer Saunders) were so paralyzingly unfunny I think I almost went into shock. The destruction of the potion factory was eye-popping, but it was a pretty blatant flexing of CGI muscle.
The prospect of a third movie was overwhelmingly boring to me and I had kind of thought that that was just...the general opinion, but I guess not. But then again, if it's as mediocre as the critics are saying it is (even the positive reviews are kind of unenthusiastic) then it will probably drop like a stone next week and hopefully the other 12 sequels DreamWorks is planning will fade away.
It's awesome, however, to see Hot Fuzz sticking in the top 10, although it should be beating Delta Farce. There's only so many times Larry the Cable Guy and his friends can go see it.

Wow, Matthew Chmiel.
First you say Shrek 1 was shit, then you say Shrek 2 was even WORSE shit, and yet:
And yet you go and pay money to see one of the first showings of Shrek 3 on opening day?
What, did you have nothing better to do?

Honestly, I'd get far more enjoyment out of watching Disney's Hercules(which I really enjoyed) for the tenth time than another Shrek. Didn't think any of them were that good.

Wouldn't that go for any movie you enjoyed a good deal then?

Dumbasses, ignorant, and shit-mongers (I like that, so I made it up) don't really help either.
I really don't understand why so many people -- not just here -- are comparing Shrek 3 to 28 Days Later. With the exception of Freddy vs. Jason, these horror films aren't really geared towards the children/family fanbase*.
*I'm kidding, but it seriously was like venturing into a family film with Freddy vs. Jason. There were families with small children, groups of 5th graders, teens, couples, and everyone you could think of. I don't think I have ever seen such a diverse audience at a horror film before. One might as well have been watching Spiderman or Shrek.

See, the great thing about being in college and on summer vacation is that I don't have nothing better to do. And I also have a job that pays extremely well -- so I can blow money on a movie like Shrek if I want to. See, when you're a movie fan, you have to pay for the shit as pay for the good. I went into the movie expecting some glimmer of hope, and as I said in the review thread, I thought there was a gem here and there that I really liked. However, as others have even mentioned, I can count all those gems on one hand. That does not make a good movie. Regardless, response from both audiences and critics pin it as the worst out of the three. Just because I didn't like the first two am I banned from seeing the third one? At least I made the trip to see the third one instead of just trashing the movie with zero knowledge.
I'm sorry I attacked your Shrek -- so you can attack Serenity, Grindhouse, Spider-man 3, or any other film of the past two-three years I liked.

The weekly box office threads should be changed to the "OMG, Movie X is making more/less money than I wanted it to, people are stupid!" thread, for correctness.

$18 of yesterday's $47M take for Shrek is mine... and that was taking two kids to a matinee ($6.50, $5.75, and $5.75).
... but I'll be giving $6 each towards Spiderman III's and Pirates' weekly take this week.

Regardless, May will have 3 $100+ million openers. Has that ever happened before? Not only that, but they the big 3 could also have the highest opening and final grossing numbers of the year. Although Harry Potter and Transformers could each get $100 million, 3 day totals.

It's projected to do $122 mm this weekend, if anything Saturday was a little disappointing relative to some of the projections earlier in the weekend(which were tracking to as much as $137 mm), especially given the cold rainy weather here in the northeast. It will beat the $110 mm opening weekend for Shrek 2(though probably not adjusted for inflation), but given the narrow window before Pirates 3, the intense amount of competition, the poor reviews, I doubt that it will come close to the $440 mm+ that Shrek 2 made domestically. By the middle of June, it won't be in the theatres, other than early afternoon showings imo...
