Bad comic book movies that should get another chance

First off, I am not talking about remakes or reimaginings...I am talking about making brand new movies that are based on elements from the comics that inspired the original movies but fell short.

My list:
Howard the Duck If Steve Gerber was allowed more input and they based it more off the comics and let it be PG-13 or even R then it could be good, and at least much better than the abomination from the 80's.

Supergirl Superhero chicks don't get a fair shake at the box office, it seems. They get the sub-scripts. Peter David wrote some great Supergirl stories for the comics, and there are others out there they could draw good material from. In the right hands, a true to form Supergirl movie could be better than Superman Returns!

Punisher I considered leaving this one off the list...we actually got a good Punisher movie-it was called Man on Fire-but I know there is a much better movie out there waiting to be made for this character.

Shadow Ever read Kyle Baker's run on the series in the late 80's? There is a kick ass movie waiting to be made.

Swamp Thing As with most of these here, there is wonderful material just waiting to be tapped from the 80's run of the comic.

Heavy Metal Nothing wrong with the first movie...one of my favorites ever, but the second one? For all the years the magazine has been in production you can't expect me to believe some of those stories aren't just ripe for making into a new series of anthology movies with cutting edge animation.

You can call it a bias, but the only Punisher I know was from the 80's comic. The one that reeked of that dirty Wall Street Journal smell. So the Miami locales and "Welcome Back, Frank" storyline used in the recent filmed version were extremely alien to me.
Even though the movie had enough entertaining moments for me resulting in a purchase, I still agree that a much harder and better Punisher movie should still get made.

Interesting call on Swamp Thing too.

Damn, I like and own all these movies *shrug* You can say The Punisher was already remade.

OK if I have to pick one, it would be Catwoman. Just use the current noir series, dark and gritty, and its just gold.

Steel - Shaquille O'neal? Enough said. I really liked the idea that the comics presented, but the movie was a joke.

Batman & Robin - A Batman movie with Mr. Freeze! Yeah!! Wait, he's Ahhnuld? And it's being directed by who?! I love the Freeze character and thought it had a lot of emotional potential, but it was ruined.

I thought The Shadow was great.

The Shadow, The Phantom, and The Rocketeer were all very cool "Comic Films" that were dumped on/and or ignored. It's a shame becuase they were all pretty good.

Catwoman...go back to the original material and you have a winner

Hmmm..two great choices. In fact, I was even thinking of Steel before I began the list but forgot to include it.

And you can't expect me to believe there isn't a good movie that could have Batman AND Robin in it. They seem to do it very well in the animated series.

Captain America!!!!

also,

Why not start making compilation movies with different less famous comic characters, each having their own stories which are tied to each other like Sin City. It would be cool seeing a DC film with the likes of The Question, Huntress, Green Arrow ect.

This could also help lead into that JLA movie Warner is eyeing in the future.

Ditto on Captain America. I'd also like to see a dark remake of Conan.

Hulk - I know they are proceeding with a sequel, but origin stories are always my favorite part of any comic book movie and the Hulk origin deserves a much better movie than this one. We didn't need all that crap with his dad and the experimentation when he was young and the hulkified poodles.

Elektra - a cool character and a good 'action movie' actress to play her (Jennifer Garner ) and they couldn't do any better than this? Definitely needs a do-over.

The Crow - terrific movie and they should have been able to come up with some good sequels. The first sequel was incredibly bad, and I only made it halfway through the second sequel before turning it off.

I'm another one in the "Punisher was good" camp. It's one of my favorite mindless action flicks, actually. One of the few that I've found myself giving multiple viewings in a short time frame. Usually, I only do that with comedies.

Howard the Duck would work best as an indie film, because it is, after all, an indie-themed comic. It's filled with self-referential humor, breaking the 4th wall, etc etc. I think the real problem of the George Lucas version was that it was trying to be too mainstream, and too much of a blockbuster, which is not even slightly within the scope of the comic.

Supergirl Superhero chicks don't get a fair shake at the box office, it seems. They get the sub-scripts. I don't think so. Supergirl is hated, period. The fans hate her, and the writers hate her. She is the whipping girl of DC. Just take a look at her new series; only months after successfully relaunching the character to stardom the comic is panned, the writers are shifted around, and fans are only hurling more and more hatred towards the character. She is a poorly conceived character to begin with, almost on the same level as Superboy.

Punisher I considered leaving this one off the list...we actually got a good Punisher movie-it was called Man on Fire-but I know there is a much better movie out there waiting to be made for this character.
Again, a terribly flawed and one dimensional character. There are attitudes of the punisher that make good elements of a movie (such as man on fire like you mentioned), but it would be too weak to be it's own movie. Dark humor would be the key here, but i think that kind of tone would really throw off movie goers.

Shadow Ever read Kyle Baker's run on the series in the late 80's? There is a kick ass movie waiting to be made.
The Shadow movie was actually very entertaining. It had the pulp attitude that made the Rocketeer such a great movie. The only problem this movie had was that a lot of people took it waaaaay too seriously. Enjoying the comic fantasy for what it is - and how well executed it is - is the key to enjoying this movie.

Swamp Thing As with most of these here, there is wonderful material just waiting to be tapped from the 80's run of the comic.
This would make another great "indie" movie, what with the existential themes that were explored in the modern age. But i have a feeling most people would tap the horror edge of this comic, which is a big mistake.

Heavy Metal is one of those movies that encapsulates ideas less than it does actual storytelling, which is why a sequel is really unnecessary and why the original has always been a classic. But it would be fun to see.

Same boat as you on this one. I loved the latest punisher film and thought it did a lot of good to frank castle. Made him a lot more built up than his comic counter part. Excellent camp

Raimi is aboard so far to produce a remake.

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? Columbia Pictures and Sam Raimi know.

After a lengthy negotiation, Columbia has acquired the screen rights to "The Shadow," the legendary 1930s pulp hero, for a big-screen adaptation to be produced by Raimi and Josh Donen through their Buckaroo Entertainment banner. Michael Uslan is also producing via his Comic Book Movies, Llc/Branded Entertainment.

Columbia has set Siavash Farahani to write the screenplay.

"The Shadow" debuted in 1931 on a CBS radio show which aimed to boost the magazine circulation of sponsor Street & Smith. The character was actually the moniker for the announcer, and listeners began demanding stories based on the name.

Walter B. Gibson created the character, writing the adventures of a crime-fighter who skulked in shadows wearing a hat and cape, and who had the power to cloud men's minds.

The Shadow became one of the greatest pulp heroes of the time, and the radio series, which featured a young Orson Welles, spawned the catchphrase "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!"

The character proved a merchandising bonanza, was the subject of seminal comic books, and influenced an array of pop culture, from Batman to "V for Vendetta."

The character moved to the screen, becoming the hero of several movies in late '30s and '40s, a Columbia cliffhanger serial starring Victor Jory, and a couple of TV series in the early days of television.

The Shadow's most recent incarnation was a big-budget 1994 feature from Universal starring Alec Baldwin and directed by Russell Mulcahy. The movie didn't fare well at the boxoffice, quashing a hoped-for franchise.

A "Shadow" movie has long been a dream project for Raimi, and the crime-fighter's influence can be seen in Raimi's 1990 movie, "Darkman."

"I've been a passionate Shadow fan ever since I was a kid and have long dreamed of bringing this character to the screen," Raimi said. He is not attached to direct at this time.

After "Spider-Man 3" opens in May, the future of the Raimi-directed mega-successful franchise becomes an open question. Star Tobey Maguire has not committed to doing more. And Columbia is relishing having Raimi's cinematic fingers on another action hero.

"We're thrilled to be re-teaming with Sam as he brings another legendary comic book character to a new generation of fans," Columbia president of production Matt Tolmach said. "This property is in the perfect hands."

Said Uslan: "My first comic-book writing gig in the '70s was writing for DC's 'Shadow' comics. I had the chance to spend time with Walter Gibson and derive my understanding of the character directly from the original source himself. Working with Sam, Josh and the entire team at Columbia, I know I am working with the Shadow dream team."

CBM/Branded's F.J. DeSanto will co-produce the film.

Sam Dickerman is overseeing development of the movie for Columbia Pictures.

Raimi is repped by CAA.

Endeavor-repped Farahani's credits include "Max Payne," a video game adaptation for 20th Century Fox

Uh... If they are going to re-make either Daredevil or Elektra Saga, it should be in Frank Miller's version, not some Hollywood bullshits. And DO NOT CAST JENNIFER GARNER!! She's horrible actress for that role.

I asked a 2000 AD rep at a Q&A about rumors I'd heard that there would be 2 British productions (one featuring the Dark Judges) and he said they've been trying to get that off the ground and said, "write me a script."

I was thinking "Seriously?"

I also agree with the OP about the Helfer/Baker run on The Shadow. That run was some of the best comic goodness I have ever read in my life. That story would merit a really strong ensemble cast. It was mostly about The Shadow's agents/slaves and had a strong dose of killer humor.

Also, if they adapted the Miller/Sienkiewicz story for Elektra: Assassin they could have a good movie on their hands. Unfortunately these are the same people that could take Miller's Dark Knight and turn it into Burton's Batman.

Though the movie isn't bad as the thread is about bad comic book movies I'd like to see more Dick Tracy movies.
