I'm a new poster

I'm in the process of buying a Standalone DVD recorder and my simple question is : Recording a TV Show to a blank DVD, when I copy a show ie. House on the DVD and still have plenty of space on that DVD can I record the first show and then record the second show and third show.... you get the idea... until I fill the blank DVD up. In other words does the Standalone DVD Recorder let me put edit the shows on the DVD like you do on a VCR ?

Thanks a lot,

TC

From my recorder experience, I'm able to add new programs to the disc as long as it hasn't been finalized. Since mine has a hard drive I usually wait to write a disc until I have enough to fill it up though.

Yes, you can keep recording until the disc is used up and it doesnt have to be at once. you can record one show at a time if you want. as far as this...
"In other words does the Standalone DVD Recorder let me put edit the shows on the DVD like you do on a VCR ?"
what do you mean by "edits"? You can create chapters and delete titles if you use a +rw/-rw disc. If you use a +r/-r you cannot make edits.

JZ1276, thanks for the reply and you answered my question. What would you suggest as far as the best Standalone DVD Burner ? I have heard that a Panasonic is a good one. I'm on a fixed income and don't think that I can afford to let go with the $ for one with a Hard Drive. Wish that I could, will spend around $ 200.

Thanks,

TC

Find whichever Panny is around $200. You'll love it, I promise.

Oh, and get yourself a stack of Taiyo Yuden discs to avoid problems.

I agree with the above poster. I've gone through about 5 dvd recorders since they first came out...RCA, Phlips, Cyberhome, etc. Only one that NEVER malfunctioned or broke down completely was the Panasonic I have now and it's been almost 2 years and I use it all the time. Pioneer makes reliable recorders also. I'd go with either one.

No. The ANT in on any DVD recorder will not accept a HD signal, only analog.

But you can record HD channels in topnotch DVD quality. It rivals the best DVD movies out there. You have to have an Svideo output from your HD tuner. Sounds like yours is in the TV, does it have an output?

Spiky, I have a Svideo out that comes out of my HD8300 DVR Cable Box and a Svideo that connects to my HDTV and runs out to my JVC Home Theater Surround System. Does that help ?

One thing on a different question is my HDTV or the JVC Home Theater doesn't have a HDMI connector and someone told me to buy a HDMI-to-DVI adaptor to make a big difference... Is it worth it or not.....

I'm planning on buying a good Panasonic DVD Recorder, if you think that would work good with what I have... My HDTV is a couple year old Westinghouse, someone told me it was a good TV... he may have seen me coming. I like it o.k.

Thanks for your help...

you didnt mention you had a cable box. Run the S Video directly from your cable box to the DVD recorder and the red and white RCA audio cables from your cable box to your dvd recorder also and you can record the HD signal. It will not in in DD 5.1 though, itll be 2.0.

Um, it sounds like you are not watching HD. If you are using Svideo from the box to the TV, you are not getting HD. Get an HDMI-DVI cable at monoprice for connecting to the TV. And then use the Svideo for any DVD recording.

To watch my HD channels... I'm using the Pr(red) Pb(blue) Y(green) cables. which run from the HD Cable Box & Connect to the HDTV. that is the only way to watch the HDTV stations. On the Main menu it reads TV-AV1-AV2-S Video-YPbPr 1-YPbPr 2-VGA-DVI... To watch regular stations I have to set to TV and HDTV set to the YPbPr 1

That's component, not Svideo

Component is how I watch the HD channels not the round S Video cable.

You should be fine with that, I doubt there is any reason to go to HDMI/DVI for the TV connection.

Your probably right, the picture that I have is awesome. I don't really think it could be any better. I'm going out to buy me a DVD Recorder, I just won't to make sure that I have all the connectors to burn a HD quality picture on my DVD's. My HD8300 DVR Cable Box has a S Video, my HDTV has a S Video, and don't you think my DVD Recorder should have S Video connectors ?

Thanks for all the advice. The Panny DVD Recorder is AWESOME. I still haven't got my surround sound system hooked up. I transfered one of my Eagles concerts from VHS to DVD and it did great.
