Remember the story of how Tony held up Feech Lamanna's card game when he was young?
Feech was a part of the original 'Soprano' family which back then was known as the DiMeo family b/c the guy who ran it was named DiMeo
but eventually Tony's father and Uncle Junior (who worked under DiMeo) gained more control so it became known as the 'Soprano' family instead
dang, i miss big pussy
i think the Feds who have been around longer probably still think of it as the 'DiMeo Family'

Just like Mr. Vincent Gigante was allegedly Boss of the Genovese Family and John Gotti was allegedly Boss of the Gambino Family.
Vito Genovese died in 1969 but what was originally known as the Morello Family (1st ruled by Antonio Morello, then eventually Joe Masseria) became the Luciano Family (under Charlie Luciano and then Frank Costello). Don Vito took over when Costello retired (which was brought on by the fact that Vito sent 2 guys to kill Costello. The attempt failed and the shooter was Vincent "The Chin" Gigante). It was then called the Genovese Family and stayed that way even after Don Vito's death almost 40 years ago.
Vincent Mangano and then Albert Anastasia ran what would later be called the Gambino Family before. When Anastasia was murdered Carlo Gambino took over control and the family was known as the Gambino Family ever since. Don Carlo died in '76. Paul Castellano was "willed" the position of Boss, John Gotti took it from him, was jailed and it's been a committee thing since. But the name hasn't changed.
