Heroes? The season is not even over, and they are predicting that Heroes is going to save NBC. Its ratings are limping to a finish.
I love Lost, but having it at #11?
And no Farscape/Buffy/Bablyon 5?
and Eternal sunshine as sci-fi?
And where is return of the jedi?
Props for X-files at #4 tho.

I like the list, but I don't agree with the Matrix as #1.

Doesn't confuse me at all. SciFi has dramatic side that is rarely explored. Twilight Zone is a perfect example of dramatic SciFi.
I am glad not to see Star Wars and other fantasy films being passed off as sci-fi.

I loved The Matrix, but Blade Runner is better.
And while I really dug Starship Troopers, how can you put that at #19? Especially when Robocop ain't even on the list.

For me (at least based on the DVDs I own and the ratings I gave them) the list would be (in no particular order):
12 Monkeys
[Alien]/Aliens/Alien3
Enemy Mine
Starship Troopers/Roughnecks
Terminator (the whole trilogy)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Total Recall
Impostor
V (Both Miniseries)
Galaxy Quest
Equilibrium
Tron
Brazil
Gattaca
Blade Runner
The Matrix
Outer Limits (90s)
Pitch Black
Dead Zone (the series)
I Robot
Top 5 would be (again no particular order)
Babylon 5
Firefly/Serenity
Battlestar Galactica (the new series)
Stargate/Stargate SG1
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan/Star Trek 6: Undiscovered Country
I like Lost but I'm not sure I really consider it Sci-Fi, personally I put it more in the Fantasy genre.

But I do think it is a much broader term since Star Wars and its usage does include fantasy. I don't agree that it should and apparently neither does EW. Spaceships, aliens and lasers make fiction ... not necessarily Science Fiction. It takes an examination of the science. Not as a mystical force, but as the framework movie. Star Wars never stops to examine its world from a scientific stand point. It is a fantasy story with emphasis on the narrative.
But that is just my not so humble opinion and I am a bit of a nerd ;-P

Could it be that the EW folks that made the list aren't as big of sci-fi nuts as you guys?
I used to hate anything called sci-fi, but now consider myself an average joe TV viewer and sci-fi fan - and I would consider Buffy and the like sci-fi. Then again I'm not the overly critical critic () that a lot of you are.

Similar to Lost I would call Buffy more of a fantasy, or maybe horror but I never found it that scary/horrific. Dead Zone is one that I would probably call Sci-Fi though... speaking of which I guess I need to find space for it in my list now

Yeah but then how do you explain Star Wars: Clone wars inclusion into the mix?

I agree - I consider Buffy and anything vampirish fantasy. Same goes for superhero movies.

No Dark City (my favorite movie )? No Farscape or Babylon 5? I think the committee that came up with this list at EW didn't have any scifi fans on it.
Edit: Omg--I just realized Gattica isn't on this list either. WTF?

What a terrible list. One, why mix movies and television shows? Is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan really "better" than Doctor Who? How do you even begin to rationalize that?
Children of Men?
Heroes?
Lost?
Galaxy Quest? (!)
No Babylon 5? No Star Trek: Deep Space Nine? No Dark City?
This list is an absolute joke.

If we're going to expand this to science fiction and fantasy, I'd suggest Being John Malkovich would also need to be included.
