Can I rant about Movie Gallery please??

OK...here are some things that really irked me at Movie Gallery yesterday:

First off, I bought Borat, Casino Royale, Talladega Nights and The Departed for just over $30. So I was very excited about the price and the movies I actually got.

The rants:

#1 Account credit.....

My friend bought some $9.99 movies for half price. After he paid, he noticed that War of the Worlds rang up as the full $9.99. So, you'd think you'd get the $5 back on the credit card...NO!!!! Everything, she told me, even price errors, are given back as store credit. Beware before they print a receipt!!!!!! Now my friend has $5 sitting in a place we may never visit again--

#2 You can't check scratches on DVDs until you are out of the store....

So I tell the lady, I would like to check the DVDs before I take them home. She rudely tells me NO....If this were a Friday evening with 10 people in line I wold expect her reaction: "No, we are NOT allowed to do it!!! You must play it in a DVD player at your home before you can say it skips." The store won't let you check the discs! How crazy is that!? So I go to the car and check my DVDs and I notice that Casino Royale is rather beat up. (Hell, I know I'm buying used, I'm not looking for a virginal surface. This was beat up pretty bad). I come back in to return it and and the lady tells me, "I can't return it." I said, "I went home and it doesn't work." She goes, "actually sir, you have to wait 24 hours." I was pissed. The store was empty and it would have been so easy for me to get a new copy. In the time she argued the logistics of this, we could have checked. Again, I know this policy is supposed to combat people checking every DVD out especially with long lines, but i was very rational and only would have taken a second. She also suggested me using DVD doctor on the DVD I just bought!!!

#3 You can't exchange full for widescreen...

I accidentally bought a full screen Departed. There are so many stickers on the damn thing that it just confused me and I f'd up. So I called up before I posted this, and I asked if I could make an exchange. She tells me that it is a different version, therefore a different movie. I cannot return this.

I hate these people

I work for Movie Gallery, and I agree that it sucks, but you went to an especially sucky store.
On the first point, she probably didn't know how to put it back on the credit card, I'm not sure if we can do that even, I'd give the credit too, it's the easiest way unless you want to sit there forever while they call the help desk and they are on hold for 20 minutes.

The other two are complete bullshit though. There is no reason why you can't check the discs there. I'm actually quite happy when people ask becuase it saves them the trip of coming back later and bitching about it. Most of those discs are scratched to hell, I find it ridiculous that more people buy used movies without checking them first.

If you go in with your receipt there is absolutley no reason why you can not exchange the movies. There is no 24 hour policy, I exchange things for people hours later all the time.

There are plenty of reasons to hate Movie Gallery, but you shouldn't have to deal with this. I would call the manager, and if that was the manager, then call the district manager. This lady lied to you and made up policies that don't exist, and are rather stupid and impractical.

I agree with all of your points. I used to buy ALOT of used dvds from MG. They had attractive prices with the buy two, get two from time to time and you would get the original case with inserts. I know this may not seem like a big deal to some, but I want the dvd the way it would be if I were to buy it new. It's the same reason I stopped buying used from Blockbuster years ago.

As far as your experience went OP I highly suggest looking for other stores in the same area. There were/are alot of Movie Gallerys in the Twin Cities area and my experiences vary greatly depending on which store I was shopping. If a certain store manager is a pain in the ass and you don't want to deal with her, try another store. Most of the service I've received had been great on the store level. It's corporate's policy to do away with the original packaging that I'm not in agreement with.

Oh no, don't get me wrong. I would gladly go to MG every day of the week to rent. Just not gonna take the old inventory off their hands if they can't be bothered with selling them the way they got them. For the record Blockbuster still sucks. But that's for another thread.

Hmmm I get a lot of stuff from MG for years now with the B2G2, and ive never had these problems. Maybe this is just a bad store.

OP, you just weren't forceful enough. You were just dealing with an especially dumb dumbass. Don't take no for an answer, especially since all 3 of those things are BS. Can't credit back to a credit card? WTF!!! Call their customer service and raise hell until you get exactly what you want. And then raise some more hell just for the fun of it. Also, you and your buddy should contact your credit card companies and file a dispute for those charges.

For the record, I've done this before, and they exchanged it no problem.
