Weekend Box Office thread (05/04/07 - 05/06/07)...

Spiderman 3 broke the record for one day take. $57 million +

http://www.darkhorizons.com/news07/070505a.php

"Spider-Man 3" has already shattered records it seems. In one day the third adventure of the webslinger took in a whopping $57,274,000 at the U.S. box-office and snagged approximately 80% to 85% of the weekend's film business.

The number gives it the biggest opening day for a movie in history, several million ahead of last year's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" which took in $55.8 million on its opening day. The film looks set now to slightly beat out 'Pirates' opening weekend record of $135.5 million.

Wonder if this opening is an indication of how most of these summer movies will do, especially Pirates 3...

I liked the movie, but had issues with it, but so glad its racking in the money.

I remember people having issues with PotC: DMC but it still racked in $1 billion worldwide. It's still more an event rather than living up to expectations.

I am more shocked by how terrible Lucky You is doing than by how well Spider-Man 3 is doing...

But I really enjoyed Spider-Man 3 and think it is the best of the trilogy even if the last act is rather flawed and weak compared to the rest of the film....

When you release the same day as Spider-Man 3...what else can you expect?
Still, I'm hoping it'll be in theater's long enough so I can check it out.

Today, Spider-man 3 will either do a little bit more or a little bit less. The past two Spider-man films have all had a bump on Saturday.

If there's a bump, it will do: $61.4 million (which will lead to biggest opening weekend ever).
If there's a drop, it will do: $47.2 million (which will lead to $130m opening weekend -- a few million shy of Pirates 2).

Jesus H. that's a big nut. I'm planning to go see it tomorrow so hopefully I can avoid some of the crowds that have been going so far.

Not going near the theaters this weekend to see ANY movie. But I'll try to catch "Spider-Man 3" one night this week after work.

Pretty much all of the evening showings in Vegas were sold out. Fandango was reporting at least five-to-six theaters had all of their showings sold out by 6pm, despite each of those theaters playing the film on anywhere from three-to-seven screens. I know all of the IMAX showings for the film here in Vegas this weekend were sold out two weeks ago.

I'm going 6:30am at the new IMAX. No other movie is playing at this time (Spidey on the regular screen starts at 7:45am), so there won't be a crowd. It's early but I'm used to getting up early and it should be an interesting group of people that show up.

I know there were lines for the 6:30 AM IMAX here in Irvine yesterday. I think there will be fairly decent crowds at all showings this weekend.

So much for the negative reviewers (yeah, movie had a few problems, but I detect a large amount of "let's take the franchise down a notch" in some of these reviews). Go Spidey!

The 6:30AM show at the IMAX here in Vegas was sold out on Friday. I only know that as I was there seeing it before work.

One theater in my area is playing Spider-Man 3 36 times a day. That's ridiculous.

Well, I'll see what I can get in to. I'd like to go IMAX in Irvine, but if thats sold out all day tomorrow I'm sure I can catch it on one of the umpteen screens it's playing on.

Well, when a studio takes a film off the shelf where it has been sitting for a few years, and releases it the same day as one of the most anticipated movies of the year, what did they expect?

And they're probably selling out 25 of those and playing to at least 3/4 houses on the rest.....that is crazy business!
