Time Warner Cable Options/Deals?

Going to have to get Time Warner Cable/Internet for a while instead of DirecTV...are there any good deals on a cable/internet/phone package? How is the quality of each?

Do they have a decent DVR? How much is it generally?

Thanks for any info.

I don't have it myself, but here's the local information. Going to the kiosk for Time Warner at the mall actually gives you a better deal than calling them direct. The package most people are getting: Full speed Road Runner, Cable with DVR, phone service, one year free HBO for $99 a month (good at that price for a year).

Personally, I think the TWC DVR sucks. But's that's just me.

I really like TW Cable/Internet. I use Sunrocket voip (2 years for $199).

I pay $115 a month for Internet HD-DVR, HD+. Kind of pricey. Without HD it would probably be around $100.

HD package seems to be shrinking rather than growing. Loss of INHD2 wasn't painful, but it is one less HD channel. We have Video On Demand and if you pay attention you can occaisonaly find good programming there. Lots of SDTV compression artifacts, but the HDTV is acceptable.

The internet quality is good, getting between 2-3mb down, although most servers would not allow it. The up is bottlenecked to 512k (I believe) and port 80 incoming is blocked to disuade you from creating a web server.

Thanks for the info...I *could* continue to use DirecTV, but I'm only going to be living at this place for ~6 months, and didn't really want to hassle with running cables, drilling holes, etc.

I can get DSL and phone service from TDS for under $30/mo (for the first 6 months), on top of a DirecTV bill of about $60, so for $10/mo (plus the ability to continue using my DirecTivos), it might be worth putting up the dish and running cables.

When we lost INHD2, we gained Music HD (MTV/VH1/CMT rolled into one HD station). Not a great trade off, but we didn't lose a channel.

I wish. We still don't have a CW HD station in the North East Ohio area.

Would you mind explaining your feeling on this? I have a TWC DVR and like it all right. It occasionally behaves funky and doesn't record something, but then again, I've noticed that lots of people have those occasional problems.

And as for all of you complaining about Time Warner's HD offerings, you should move in with me. When we lost INHD2, we didn't get a music HD channel, unless I'm totally missing something. That is when our area finally got Universal HD. Since getting an HDTV around Thanksgiving, we've always had ABC and CBS HD feeds. A couple of months ago, we finally got an NBC HD feed, which promptly quit working after a week or two. Now, once again, the NBC HD channel is working, but for how long ... ? And as for Fox or CW HD feeds, you've got to be kidding me! In fact, technically, our area doesn't even have a Fox affiliate, so you have to have cable or satellite to get Fox. It's rather upsetting not being able to watch 24 or Veronica Mars in HD. I'd switch to Direct or Dish, but while both of those offer local channels in my area, neither offers any of those local channels in HD. So, Time Warner will just have to do ...

Well I work for a TW affiliate and I get Roadrunner and Digital Cable for free, so I've enjoyed it for about 5 years, but I got pissed this year because they don't have the baseball package anymore, freaking assholes.

We JUST recently got The CW and MyNetwork in HD here in the Raleigh/Durham area about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I guess there was some issues with Sinclair broadcasting, which owned both in the area.

I don't want to start a flame war, so I won't compare it to anything.

These are all examples I've had direct experience with. I tried one for a week, my sister currently has one, my aunt currently has one. So this comes from multiple boxes.

--It records SD channels when the HD channel was picked.
--Missing scheduled recordings still in the to do list
--Scheduled recordings disappear from the to do list.
--Freezing while playing
--Get only New episodes doesn't work properly
--Mysterious deletions of shows already recorded
--Starting late, ending early on recordings
--Returns an error message rather than playing a previously recorded show
--Mysteriously shuts down without warning

As to "lots of people have those problems"? Lots of people have cable DVRs. IMO, there's a bit of a correlation there.

I agree with everything on the list but the first and rarely see the others on my SA8300HD. It certainly isn't a TIVO quality DVR and lacks many of the TIVO's great features, but it is great 99% of the time. It most certainly doesn't suck.

The CW in NE Ohio is having problems with Canadian regulations ... Or so they say.

I've had my DVR from TWC since last September, and have NEVER experienced any of the problems on that list.

I picked up my DVR box personally from their service center, and that may make a difference, since I've heard that the DVRs brought by TWC installers are usually rebuilt/"corrected" units.

I'm assuming a standalone Tivo will work just fine with Time Warner?

I'm leaning towards just getting DSL ($10/mo for 6 months) and Time Warner cable ($40/mo for 3 months...~$67 after?). You don't pay any extra for non-digital in additional rooms, do you?
