So I haven't been following this (b/c we don't have HBO...), but I noticed that this is the end already? What happened? Poor ratings, contract disputes, something else? Any links to some info?

This just sucks!! I just got fully into Rome. Having it be canceled is just crap.
I guess I'll just have to rent Season 1 and 2 and have a marathon. I won't give HBO the pleasure of taking my money for a show that they cancel too soon.

Bravo! What a fantastic series finale. And I'll probably be in the minority but I have no problem at all with this being the last episode. This wasn't a series about Roman history. The era was a backdrop for a series about Titus Pullo and Lucious Veronus. Their story was told wonderfully and completely. To carry this series on after Veronus' death would be ridiculous IMO.
Let the creative minds behind this masterpiece move on and bring us a new story. Let's see these actors in new roles. And let's remember ROME for what it is. One of if not the best dramatic television series in history. Do not mourn for what could have been. This is how the best shows go out, by their own hand.
Now, about the finale. Cleopatra, that fucking sell out ****! James Purefoy had better submit that scene of Antony's suicide for an Emmy nomination. Cleopatra's meeting with Octavian was great. Hilarious that he can't see the affect he has on his enemies.
Pullo and Vorenus' reunion in Egypt brought a huge smile to my face. The look on Titus' face when me "met" his son was priceless. Their escape back to Rome is a little convenient considering how impossible it seemed to be when they were talking about it that first night, but whatever.
I could go on, but I have to work in the morning.
I also got my favorite line of dialog from the whole series this episode:
"Define good."

Great way to finish the show. For all the bitching about shows jumping the shark, "Rome" gave us 22 great 1-hour eps, told a complete story, and maintained it's high levels throughout. Hard to complain about that.
Love that Pullo and the kid walk off into the sunset: "About your father ..."

I'm glad that they ended it with a great story - through it's not 100% history accurate, but highly entertainment! I enjoyed the series very much.

Great ending...
Everything wraped up for each charachter
Cesar : sole ruler of Rome
Atia: She gained the power she always wanted - but without love it is worthless.
Veronus: made peace with his kids
Pullo: gets some $ in his pocket and walks off with his son.
Great place to end the story..
I do wish they would have showed more of the battle

Great final ep. for an outstanding series. Seriously, I don't recall there ever being a bad episode in the bunch.
Absolutely criminal if Rome doesn't get a slew of Emmy noms./wins.
Will be sad it's gone as it's one of only a handful of entertaining and SMART shows on TV right now. Thank God The Shield premiers in April to (sort of) fill the void left by it.

Yeah, that was my only problem with an otherwise excellent finale.

Great episode however I would have liked to have seen some of the battle that was over when the episode started.

A great finale. I loved the finale scene with Pullo and thought Mark Antony's death scene was fantastic. I'm sad to see it go, but like said earlier, you can't really complain when a show has a nearly perfect run, instead of just going on and on and losing quality. One of my favourite series ever I think. Incredible.

Great ending to a great series.
I think I'm going to re-watch the British miniseries "I, Claudius" now. Chronologically, it starts only a bit after the end of "Rome", so it fits fairly well.

Like others have said, this is about as good of a 22 episode run any show had. Not a single bad or filler episode. Loved Antony's death scene with Vorenus by his side, then dressing him in Roman attire.
Whatever happened to the Jew, forget his name...? He accidentally killed his brother, is that the last we saw of him?
