Annoying HD-DVD ad with sound

Any chance it's coming from an ad network and can be blocked?

Here's the click through URL.

It's not from a network. It's being directly run on the site and like any direct run ad the sound only happens when you mouse over the banner or click it.

Not for me in Firefox 2. I'm getting the sound every time the ad loads on a new page (both the banner ad and the square between posts ad). Then the sound doesn't come up again.

I don't know about sound (no speaker at work) but the darn thing pops over the first post and I need to go back and reopen the thread.

I am not clicking, so it may be an accidental mouse-over. Then there is no close until the thing finishes running. This is using FF as well.

Exactly. Extremely Annoying. And if you jump from one forum to another, it happens again, and again....

Is there any way to have the ad default to "no sound" and then click on the speaker icon if you want to hear it? That's what other sites do for video clips, etc.

I know that ads are necessary here, but having to mute my system volume everytime I visit DVDtalk lately seems a little ridiculous. If there is anything that can be done, I would greatly appreciate it.

It's only come up for me twice and it's easy to turn off for me. I guess I've been lucky.

I've gotten it a few times on IE 6 where it's not triggered by mouseOver. Each time it's been the dragon. Most of the time, there's no sound, but everyone once in a while, it's screwed up. I know it's not mouseOver, because I'm using a laptop and navigating completely by keyboard.

I was getting the fighter plane sound effects randomly on Firefox, when the ad itself wasn't even visible on the screen. I scrolled up and there it was. Had to Adblock that bad boy.

Yeah, the fighter plane is the one I'm getting the most, and still getting sound with no mouse overs or clicks.

But as I only get it a couple times a day its not a huge deal, just a slight annoyance.

I'm with y'all on this one. It doesn't have to be visible for the frickin' thing to start playing... I can scroll to the bottom of a page featuring it and it plays no matter what.

It's pissing me off too.

It's nearly as bad as that damned "American Haunting" ad from a few months ago. Since I've been coming to this site, there have only been TWO time periods when I've considered coming here less...and those times are when the two ads I refer to are/were running.

Incredibly intrusive. If ads of this type ran all the time, I'd never come here.

Seriously, Geoff... there's gotta be some way you can make money without having to resort to these kind of ads. Extremely annoying.

Jesus Christ. I just accidentally scrolled over the HD-DVD ad with my headphones on while I was listening to music. That goddamn biplane ad just about took my ears off.

Seriously, Geoff, I'm all in favor of helping you pay for the site. If you want to throw in the occasional interstatial page ad, hell, I can suffer in silence for a few seconds. But any flash ad with sound -- especially one that is that loud and obnoxious -- should be barred as a matter of course.

Can't you at least take a poll, get some member feedback, figure out what we are willing to take? If these ads really pay that well, great, but it makes me not want to come back to this site at all. And considering the complaints over similar ads... I don't think I'm alone.

orange...i'm guessing you are using FF2? I think that happens for me too, but 99% of the time I have my speakers muted, so I don't hear it.....though when I had them on...definitely made me jump.

Can someone please post a step-by-step process on how to successfully Adblock these friggin' HD-DVD ads? Please? I installed AdBlock for Firefox 2, thought I had it blocked, but it still keeps coming back. Biplanes and dragons...this is pissing me off to no end.

Its against the forum rules to you ad blocking software, so you won't be able to get help here.

I use FF 2 and it does not auto load. I'd love to help trouble shoot those of you who are having issues with the ad but you'd need to post the version of ff you are running, your os and the version of flash you have installed.

Of course my first advice is going to be that you should make sure you are up to date on all of those elements as any of those could lead to the issue (old FF or Old flash).

Firefox 2.0.0.3--it just updated last night again, haven't got the ad this morning to see if it still auto loads. But I have the auto update enabled on it, so I'm always running the most current release.

OS is Win XP Service Pack 2.

Not sure where to check the flash version?

Firefox 2.0.0.3, Mac OS 10.4.9, Flash 9,0,28,0. The ad will appear at the top of a forum without sound. Never touch the thing, never mouse over it, nothing. Scroll down the forum page, BAM, the sound blasts through the system. Every. Single. Time.

What really makes me wonder is that other web sites with this type of advertising are setup by default with sound disabled. You have to click on the speaker icon to get sound with the ad. imdb and yahoo are perfect examples of this. Why can't that be the case here? I don't understand at all.

Geoff, I am running IE7, Windows XP, Flash 9. I just got the biplane ad three times in succession. It's freakin' annoying. Shouldn't any Flash ad be sans sound?
