Now it's Call of Duty 2 (PC)
Still playing Far Cry, but decided to grab CoD2 when I saw Best Buy has it marked down $10 to $19.99 this week. That's for the Game of the Year edition.
Won't open it until I have time to install it. Any comments on what I need to know about this game? I'm expecting to be dazzled and awed by the graphics, and expecting to fully turn up all the effects on my rig.
Big question I have is with this Game of the Year Edition, are there still patches and/or updates for it?
Just about any game I have an interest in I'll grab for this price - just waiting for the FEAR expansion to get that low again (it was once before at BB, but I missed it!)
Games purchased since I got my new computer in November: GTA III, FEAR, Doom 3, Far Cry and CoD2.

Not 5.1, but at least I do have a subwoofer with my 2.1 Logitech X-230 system. And its tons better than the itty bitty things in the LCD monitor.
And you're absolutely right - video card and the power supply that had to go with it were a great investment. Just had to get over the "worry" about being able to do a power supply swap.

In a vein that's hopefully related enough to post here, here's THE reason I had to see to know that I won't be installing my free Vista update when it arrives:
"Computerworld is reporting that gamers who have installed Vista are reporting problems with first person-shooter titles such as CounterStrike, Half-Life 2, Doom 3. and F.E.A.R. (Users have compiled lists of games with Vista issues.) The complaints, which have turned up on gamers' forums, cite crashes and low frame rates. Not surprisingly, the problems relate to graphics hardware and software: 'Experts blame still-flaky software drivers, Vista's complexity, and a dearth of new video cards optimized for Vista's new rendering technology, DirectX 10. That's despite promises from Microsoft that Vista is backwards-compatible with XP's graphic engine, DirectX 9, and that it will support existing games. Meanwhile, games written to take advantage of DirectX 10 have been slow to emerge. And one Nvidia executive predicts that gamers may not routinely see games optimized for DirectX 10 until mid-2008.'"

Vista is a mess for anyone who actually uses the computer for fun. Games are screwed up, video playback in several areas is screwed up and audio is REALLY screwed up. I'm dual booting currently but really spend little to no time at all in vista because it sucks because I like to have fun.

Far Cry and COD 2 are both great games. I also recommend Aliens vs Predator 2, No One Lives Forever 1 and 2, Prey, Half Life 1, 2, Episode 1, Counter Strike: Source, Condemned, Unreal Tournament and 2004, and of course Deus Ex. I have always been a big PC FPS fan, but my PC is showing its age and for the price of upgrading the bugger i can get a PS3 or 360. So i will pick up a new PC in a few years, but will probably be switching to a next gen system by years end.

Great game! Really makes you feel like you are taking part in huge battles. Graphics look great maxed out (Running 4600+ X2, ATI X1800XT, 2gb ram).
My only complaint was it's length. It keeps building momentum, then it just ends.
Another vote for NOLF 1 and 2!! Underappreciated fun games, hope they make a 3rd.

COD2 is awesome (I liked it better than 3). If the Veteran level of this is the same difficulty as it is on the 360, you'd better keep a few spare mice handy, because you'll need them after throwing your current one against the wall

Had some of my first PC problems last night.
Started with Far Cry not wanting to start at my saved point. After it seemed to load up, the computer would restart. It was only with Far Cry - started up FEAR and Doom 3 with no problems.
So, dumb me, I uninstalled CoD2 to see if that was somehow having any effect. It wasn't.
But then Far Cry seemed to start working again. Which is good.
So I reinstalled CoD2. I had it totally freeze up on me twice during the opening video, once just as installed, and once with the 1.3 patch (which I don't think affects single player, anyway.)
One thing I did before the second install was I uninstalled Windows Defender. I was getting a message about a dll file being "missing," and saw some posts online that Defender was to blame. So I removed it, and didn't see that missing dll message again.
Also, each time I started CoD2 on the second install, even when it worked, it kept giving me a message that my hardware had changed, when it hadn't.
Advice? Should I try uninstalling and reinstalling again?

Been LONG time since I used CoD 2 - I was involved in a Call of Duty clan (which I'm deputy clan leader of this division) and I used to knew all problem/problem solving, etc... Till I decided to step down and have not touch CoD 2 ever since - I say about a year.
You can try uninstall/re-install it and see if it work. If not, check for possible new patch from C0D 2 maker.

I have the Game of the Year edition, which is at 1.2. It looks like the 1.3 update is mostly multiplayer issues.
Yeah, I can do a reinstall, if there's a chance it could fix it. I hope I didn't screw anything up by uninstalling it in the first place.
With six CDs, it takes a while and it's a bit of a pain, but I did play enough of it to know it's worth it!

Oh, yes, it's worth it. I liked CoD2 lot. The graphic is much different (more eye candy) from what you seen on CoD1 (if you have played it).
Oh, after you uninstall it, be sure to delete the CoD2 folder before you re-install it.

After I uninstalled it, I looked on the C drive and couldn't find any trace of it. It would be in an Activision folder? Or named something else?
Also, what's better, doing the uninstall through the link in the start menu, or through the control panel? Does it matter?
Never played CoD1. Was wondering if I was missing anything by not getting it first.

The folder should be in where you install CoD 2 at. When you uninstall it, it should be at same place. It doesn't matter which uninstall you pick, both works fine.
There are big difference from Call of Duty 1 and 2. Call of Duty 1 does not have many weapons as Call of Duty 2 does. The graphic are much fancier than first one. Gameplay are much same. I really enjoyed both version lot and I had fun with my clan fellows online.
