The Departed 2-disc $16.99

Wrong picture in Stop & Shop flyer. PM at WM, Best Buy or Circuitcity.

I don't think BB would do a price match on the steel case though...

Leave it until the end of the Oscars and it will be $9.99 everywhere. I just don't understand this craze for picking up a disc the week in release.

I HIGHLY doubt that the 2-disc will be $9.99 anytime soon. And as for the "craze" of picking up a disc the week of its release, unless you're willing to wait a couple months for a potential sale, the first week prices are generally cheapest. The Departed ONE-disc will probably rise to $19.99 after next week.

An example of a typical pricing cycle: My gf's daughter wanted John Tucker for Christmas. It was $16.99, IIRC, at Target the week of its release. The next week it was $19.99 and remained at that price until a month or so later when it was on sale for $14.99 for a week. It finally dropped to $10 THIS weekend.

Seems like the John Tucker example just illustrates laidback's point - the first week may be cheaper than the next few months, but eventually the price plummets way below the first week's pricing.

I agree. This exact trend is an argument to hold off on new releases - at least the single-disc ones.

the problem is...with releases that have separate one-disc and two-disc releases.....the two-disc version NEVER goes on sale 95% of the time. so if you want the two-disc version, your cheapest option is to get it release week. it's much more likely the two-disc version will go out of print in 2 months than it will EVER be cheaper than it was during release week.

Of course. And I'm a savvy enough DVD consumer to recognize this and there's very, very few movies I feel I need to own on release week. I mean, I was patient enough to wait until the Titanic 3-disc was below $5, but for must-have titles that I want to revisit RIGHT NOW, paying $14.99 for Saw 3 or PotC upon its release makes A LOT more sense to me than waiting two months for the inevitable couple-of-dollars price drop.

To each their own, I guess.

(And my apologies to the OP for sabotaging his thread.)

Yes but it seems like World Trade Center just came out and that's already $10. I have so many movies I want to get but its much better to wait. However, I will be there Tuesday morning to get The Departed.

This is a fairly regional and YMMV thread. That Stop & Shop store is only in six states. Good deal though if you can swing the metal case for that price.

If you are really brave try getting a printed copy and then PMing in your state. When that fao schwartz store was closing I remember printing the ad for the 50.00 clearance gamecubes and managing a PM here in California at bestbuy. $80.00 off the price and she didn't even blink.

If the 12% coupon applies to a new release, you'll be set.

Unfortunately that 12% off coupon does not work on CDs/DVDs.

Correct, but there is a new 10% off coupon (I received mine on Friday), valid 2/16-2/19, which should work.

FWIW, I think garmonbozia's argument is stronger.

I've never had any problem getting BB to take the coupon on a new release, sale title, but the coupon is supposed to be taken off of regularly priced titles only.

My strategy is to pick up the two-discers at Target on release week. Thanks to Target's liberal 90-day return policy I can hedge my bet on whether the price will drop, or the two-disc will go OOP as with "Jarhead".

I have noticed that the entire price cycle seems to be shortening. It's almost to the point where Columbia House will be superfluous in building my collection.

I have the Stop & Shop sales flyer here. You can barely make out The Departed is the 2 disk edition. There is no way any of the big stores will price match with this crap. I would be embarassed to even try.

The picture in the ad is clearly the cover art of the 2 disc set. If you have trouble price matching, I would take the 1 disc version up to the register to show them that it's the 2 disc version that's in the S&S ad. I'm going to check S&S first to see if it really is the 2 disc version for $16.99 before I attempt a PM elsewhere.
