National Lampoon's Vacation series

What is your favorite National Lampoon's Vacation?

I think the original is the best, almost by far. Christmas Vacation comes in second. Third is European Vacation. Then of course, Vegas Vacation. I haven't seen Vegas Vacation in a few years, but I remember thinking it was the least funny of the series. Even though it's not as funny as 1 and 3, I've always had a soft spot for European Vacation. It think it's end credits, with that awesome song playing over the pop culture stills. I also think it's the family. I feel like I'm the only one, who thinks this movie had the best kids of the series, in terms of personalities, and also the best family unit.

I've noticed that National Lampoon has put out a boatload of direct to video releases lately. Are any of them any good? They look like the same thing that American Pie is churning out.

You can skip the second Christmas Vacation movie. It was pretty unfunny...even though the original daughter is back.

I think I'd rank them the same way. I don't know why European Vacation gets so much crap from fans(ok, the last part in Italy did suck). Vegas Vacation on the other hand was unwatchable. I still haven't been able to get through the entire movie.

Euro is last because I cringe whenever either one of the kids is onscreen. Most unattractive movie kids ever.

I agree, I found Vegas to be funnier than European.

I thought National Lampoon had nothing to do with Vegas Vacation. Unlike the other "vacation' Movies, its not even listed on the dvd cover.

That is correct. It was the first film in the series not licensed with the National Lampoon name.

National Lampoon's VACATION
National Lampoon's EUROPEAN VACATION

I detest the woefully overrated National Lampoon's CHRISTMAS VACATION, which plays much more like John Hughes during his HOME ALONE, CURLY SUE, BEETHOVEN sellout phase than his sharp, biting SIXTEEN CANDLES, THE BREAKFAST CLUB, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF phase. I can't even get through VEGAS VACATION.

I think that was kind of the point with Audrey. She was supposed to be fat and unattractive. Which makes me wonder why Johnny Lawrence was with her in the first place.

Didn't the actress who played Audrey in European Vacation pass away?

Favorite Audrey by far is Marisol Nichols in Vegas Vacation.

There's a reason why I don't own Christmas on DVD, but own the other three.

According to IMDb, she died July 15, 1996 at the age of 32.

I'd have to say "Vacation" was my favorite, closely followed by "European Vacation." Tied for last are "Christmas Vacation" and "Vegas Vacation." Those two were pretty bad, IMO, and haven't really aged well.

Audrey in that tight red dress is reason enough to love Vegas Vacation.

I still remember my dad and step mom renting European Vacation and Police Academy for Family movie night. Little did they know, that both movies would be the first time I saw female breasts onscreen. It was awesome!

I'm surprised to see so much love for European Vacation. I mean, sure, it's a good movie, but compared to the original Vacation and Christmas Vacation I don't think it's close at all.

Vacation (original)
Christmas Vacation
European Vacation
Vegas Vaction (I don't really think of this as part of the series though since John Hughes didn't write it)

John Hughes was so brilliant in the 80's. Those 3 Vacation movies, the brat-pack stuff like The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, Weird Science, and then I have a soft spot for the first 2 Home Alone movies. That's a lot of really fantastic stuff to put out in less than a decade. Too bad he completely lost his talent after 1990 or so.

Don't forget Planes Trains & Automobiles....and the underrated Mr. Mom.

Totally agree. For me, the most glaring flaw of European is the casting of Rusty and Audrey. Those are the only ones I hated in the entire series.

I don't think I could choose a favorite, though. I'd say it's a tie between the original and Christmas Vacation. I can't really compare one to the other.

On a side note, I just read today that the Vegas Vacation Audrey will be on the new season of 24.
