I went into Costco yesterday morning (21st) and their were some employees standing around a pallet. I walk over a it was around 2 dozen PS 3 60g budles. They were $699. I wasn't planning on getting one yet or at all. But, I bought one figuring I could convince myself or more importantly my wife to keep it. If not I could sell it on ebay, or sell it (at my cost) to a friend of family member who may want to buy one or just return it. Then I read that they are a lot more common than Sony was letting on. So I returned it. I figured I would let someone who really wanted it for X-Mas to get it.
Actually, I might get the Xbox 360.

Best Buy in Melbourne, FL had one just sitting there, lonely in the cage at about 10 pm tonight.

As I was driving up to Monterey CA yesterday for Christmas, I stopped off at the Santa Maria Best Buy to see if they had any Wii's. He told me no, but then he pointed to the front and said, but we just got in a stack of PS3's. I looked over and they had at least 20 boxes (not known which sizes) and I told him 'no thanx, those are getting easy to find' and left.

I returned the one I bought to Best Buy this morning and as I walked in there were no less than 5 signs all over the doors saying they had PS3's available.

And you know, it's not so much that they're shipping more PS3s than Wiis, because they're not. People simply don't want the PS3. It's an inferior product in the eyes of the consumer.

At this point I'm convinced that if the only people who purchased it at launch had been those who actually -wanted- the system then there would have been enough to meet the initial demand.

Good point. I wonder what percentage of PS3's since launch ended up on Ebay.

I can't believe the workout I'm getting with the simply the Wii sports (been playing the Wii with a childhood friend and we are re-discovering the fun in video games), my arms are sore from having a lot of fun with mainly bowling and tennis, and some baseball (almost pulled a hammy on a swing or two). The PS3 is all veneer with little new to offer in terms of interactive gameplay, and the Wii has capitalized on that aspect and produced an attractive product at a nice price point. That's why people want the Wii over the PS3 (granted, the PS3 offers quite a bit, IF you are in position to take advantage of its Blu-ray capabilities, but HD TVs aren't quite the norm for all the households in the US).

Yeah, I don't think it is so much that people don't want it or don't want what it can offer. It's just too expensive for the average American family. I think Sony vastly over-estimated the public's ability and/or willingness to spend $500-$600 on a gaming system. Not including an extra controller ($50-$60) and games ($50-$60)

2 PS3's were sitting in the glass case at the local Walmart I was just at. A 20GB and a 60GB. I assume they've been there all day. I considering buying one but I don't even want one and figured it wasn't worth the hassle of trying to sell it. The $600 is much better spent elsewhere.

I was at TRU last night and someone returned a PS3. The clerk said that was the third one that had been returned yesterday. I guess people are having second thoughts about a $600 christmas gift. Either that or getting caught up in the hype and looking for a Wii instead.
They did have a ton of Wiimotes AND Nunchucks.
There were zero of either system at 7 am this morning at Best Buy either.
*edit - the more I think about it, I bet those returned PS3s were systems people didn't have luck flipping on ebay before Christmas.

I've yet to see a single Wii in person, infact, I'm not sure they even exist.
The PS3 though, I've seen a few of those laying on the Wal-Mart shelves. I think Sony totally over-estimated on what the average American is willing to spend during the holiday season. Speaking of which, we all know American's part with more money than usual during the holiday season, if they aren't buying them now, what does that say about the PS3 during the long run? I can't see people wanting to spend $600 dollars (or $500) during the summer when they are most likely out on vacation or what not.

Every bit of anecdotal evidence I've seen or heard points to Sony being in a bit of trouble...at least in the US. I look forward to seeing what the actual numbers bear out, but right now, this looks like a launch failure of epic proportions.
I'd imagine I'll own a PS3 at some point...or maybe a 360 if it stays on its current roll, but I won't own either until the consoles are much cheaper and a good supply of Greatest Hits titles are available.
Meanwhile, I'll be having fun on my Wii.

I was at Best Buy yesterday and I saw a guy carrying around a PS3. I asked them if they had any more, assuming that he'd gotten it there (eventually I want a PS3, but I already have a Wii and 360 so it's not really a priority right now) and he asked me if I wanted to buy it. Apparently, he had got one at launch, wasn't able to eBay it for what he wanted, so he just went in to Best Buy on Christmas Eve and was peddling it to random people.
