.. ever view other DVDTalker's DVD collection links?

.. if so, what for?

Or are they just another waste of bandwidth aside from our own personal reasons for having them

Most go to some length to catalog their collections for various reasons. Some post them for all to see and others choose to not. But I'm curious about the flip side.

Do you ..

1) check out random user's collections to see what their latest purchases are?

2) generically troll user after user for new films to consider?

3) have a set of favorite users that have similar tastes? And your in the market for a few new shiny discs.

4) only feel like threadcrapping when it's another "rate my collection" thread?

5) Are you just trying to create a personal profile in hopes that one day, you'll find out enough about another user by their taste in film to stalk them more proficiently?

6) There really is no rhyme or reason; you have absolutely no pattern, freely clicking on random links whenever the urge hits?

7) Are you really that bored?

Anyway, all antics aside ..

8) If someone is posting his or her opinion of a movie, I look at their collection to see if their taste is similar to mine so I know how much weight to give to their review.

.. and to take it a step further, which edition or country to pick up - and I'm not just talking about blind buys (though I do enough of that). Being region free and the fact that it's ingrained in my head to always search for the best possible release based on whatever criteria that would be, it is at times still a reminder to research further, especially when I get lazy.

I almost never bother clicking those links. You can typically look at the first four films listed and go "oh yeah, they like those kinds of movies." I've never bothered doing this, but right off the bat you're gonna see stuff like "You've Got Mail" alongside "Lethal Weapon 2" (and no, I don't have my girlfriend's DVDs in with mine), so I should probably start doing something like that.

What I do feel is a complete waste of bandwidth is questions like this. all the detail you'll find in most people's lists. The cataloging sites include huge amounts of detail, but at least 75% of the DVDs in anyone's collection are going to be titles most people are very familiar with. You don't really need a complete synopsis and a listing of Writer, Director, Producer, and Cast with something like STAR WARS. If I ever did an online list of my DVDs, it'd be a page on my own website with just a list of titles -- if anyone wanted more detail on a specific title they could Google it or e-mail me. Besides, it might actually start a discussion, heaven forbid.

I get ideas for films I may have forgotten, or if the person has similar likes and has films I have yet to see.

No, I never look at others' collections nor do I post a link to mine. I do however like to see photos of peoples' home theater set ups and DVD collections. That's far more interesting than some online list of titles.

I have probably what you might consider is a average collection. Lethal Weapon 2 sits right next to You've got mail (still haven't alphabetized). But I do like to scroll thru others collections and see if there is a gem or two I might not have taken a second look at. Solaris Criterion Collection being one that comes to mind. Fear and loathing in las vegas is another. I don't need to have all art house, cheesed out horror, foriegn or others that some posters like to revell in. That's just their cup of tea, not mine. But I do like to look. Otherwise i probably would have never known what are some of the good "Hammer" films I have missed or other genres. Someday I will add them all to my collection.

It just proves I am cooler than anyone else in the online DVD world and nothing else in the real world.

Same here. Now the only time I look is if I'm working out a trade with someone.

I only look if somebody's made a blanket statement like "All sequels suck" or whatever, just so I can use their collection against them.

I always check people's collections to see how many of the Friday the 13th films they have. I also look to see if they've bought some of the rarer and crappier movies which I have in my collection.

It's also fun to see the collections of outspoken people like Skipnet and Rifter.

9) I like to find people who own Zardoz and Punky Brewster so I can feel superior.

I like to occasionally look at other collection links because it gives me more DVD ideas and reminds me of movies that I may have forgotten.

I check other user's collections quite often. Mostly for movies that I would like to have and add them to my wishlist. My wishlist is a bit huge at the moment though, so I haven't done it in a while.

Muad'Dib, I like your set up of Genre's on you listing. I have not update my list in over a year and have often told myself to start over because things have changed with my collection. I look at other peoples collections for ideas and movies I may have missed. Also to see what is out there in DVD-land. I'm not you would call a constant user of dvdtalk, twice a week tells me what I need to know.
