Chrissie Hynde is the greatest female rocker of all time
I had this debate with some friends last weekend. I can think of no women and few men who rock harder than Chrissie Hynde at her height with The Pretenders. Someone actually had the gall to bring up that no talent, crack whore Courtney Love. Heresy.
IMHO, Stevie Nicks is the only other women in her league.

Chrissie Hynde I can buy, but Stevie Nicks? I don't really consider her a rocker at all since she doesn't really rock. She was easily the weak link in Fleetwood Mac.

Do you seriously think she was the weak link in Fleetwood Mac? Ask yourself this- would Rumours have been hurt more by the absence of Stevie Nicks or by the replacement of John McVie with a session bass player?

I support the Kim Gordon vote. I also think, purely on longevity and inventiveness, we should include Georgia Hubley. For that matter, let's include Patti Smith and (to a lesser extent) PJ Harvey.
And Joplin.

Chrissie Hynde has to top the list, simply because she sings, writes, and plays guitar. Joan Jett would have to be near the top for the same reasons. Most female rock stars are either just front'men' (not songwriters) or not the principals in the band. Sure, Janis Joplin, Kim Deal, Tina Weymouth, Debbie Harry, etc., are great, but they weren't/aren't band leaders like Hynde. One could argue that members of all-female bands like Sleator-Kinney, The Donnas, et. al., should rank highly. I would agree, but not as much as Ms. Hynde.

Chrissie Hynde, the person who while playing in San Francisco said "I hope the muslims win"? (which was wrong to say on a number of levels)
There are PLENTY of female rockers out there. Kim from the Muffs rocks way harder than Chrissie ever did. There the Lunachicks. L7. All play, sing, & write their own songs.

Much as I like Stevie Nicks, I do have to agree with cdollaz, in that I don't consider her a rocker. I also don't think there was a "weakest link" in Fleetwood Mac, but in terms of talent I'd have to put her at the bottom. 
I own all her albums, really!
As far as greatest female rocker, I'm not sure I actually have an opinion. I'll have to think about that one!

Indeed. And no one, NO ONE, spins like her. Add a shaw and she rocks my world even more.
Tracy Partridge and Veronica Lodge (from the Archies) are close runners up as the best tambourine players.
Back to Chrissie Hynde. Ignore everything she says. She's made some rather stupid comments throughout her career. I wish rock stars would just shut the fuck up between songs and just perform.

And, I'd like to nominate the Go-Go's to this list. Well, Kathy Valentine, Jane Wiedlin, Charlotte Caffey and Gina Schock. Saw these ladies (again) this past summer and they're better than ever live. Also look fantastic. I excluded Belinda because she doesn't play any instruments.

Chrissie Hynde would also be at the top of my list---such an achingly perfect voice, completely feminine without being "girly" in any way. I think Siouxsie Sioux, while not possessing the same vocal talents as Hynde, has quite an impressive body of work as well.
