The 2006 "How Many *non-copyright-infringing* MP3s do YOU have" thread

I don't consider myself an audiophile... and I haven't habitually gone through and ripped all of my CDs to MP3... but my coworker brought up how many songs his daughter had on her iPod, and it got me curious, so I looked it up:

I have 15,615 MP3s.

And I know that I am a dot, a speck, a glimmer of light in a distant constellation, compared to some of you people. So do a quick Search: how many MP3s do you own?

I wouldn't pay a cent for compressed music.

Now as far as "ripping" is concerned, not sure what I have on my ipod right now. I need to get a new one, that's all i know. Almost full.

Just over 5,000 here at work. Don't know what I have at home, but I suspect somewhere in the 7,500 range.

Damn. I thought I would be on the high side of people here at upwards of 44K (minus my jazz collection, which I haven't uploaded just yet)... But I guess I'm not!!

~60 gigs, maybe around 15K tracks. Even though I listen to music every day for hours, that's way, way to much, IMO. I haven't heard a lot of them let alone absorbed them. I haven't ripped most of my CDs (I've probably got 2000 CDs), either.

Rest assured, Dr. Ring Ding, 44K tracks is simply nuts, I can't imagine having that many.

Like Hell you do!

That would be, assuming 12 songs per album, 10,730 albums. Not likely that you own that many, or even possible. This is also over 500GB at a mere 4mb per song (which is possible). More fun facts: if you paid $12 a pop for each album, you would have spent over $1.5 million on your collection.

So in short....I don't believe you.

11,660 in my iTunes music library, and approximately 2,000 "unfiled" on my hard drive. 95% are ripped from my own cds.

As of today...

This is the total so far, this doesn't include all my soundtracks, classical, most of my early punk, a large portion of my Industrial and Techno and all my Christmas music. All of these total around 800+ CD's that I still need to add (rip) into iTunes. I've slowly started to rip my rare vinyl and some cassette tapes, those alone total around 1000 individual tapes and albums.

!NERD ALERT!
I have only downloaded ONE song (a free promo from iTunes awhile ago). I only purchase physical CD's. So everything that is in my iTunes I own a hardcopy version of. Back when I started, I would rip at 160 kbps' now I've boosted that slightly higher to 192 kbps. Soundtracks and classical I might go a little higher.

Now that I have my newly purchased 300GB HD I don't have to worry about running out of space for awhile.

I love the fact that I can run iTunes almost 47 days playing 24 hours a day and never hear the same song twice, what can I say I'm easily impressed.

Sorry, I wasn't including the folder on my C drive with my recently ripped songs. Need to move that to my removable HD.

I did not spend $1.5 million either, a majority are of bootleg concerts that have been converted to MP3 from .shn or .flac files so I can listen on my portable players. Those were free, torrent downloads.

holy crap! I can't believe these numbers! These are all LEGALLY aquired mp3s?

I got about 7,000. Only about 30 that I would say are illegally obtained (i.e. I did not pay for them, they are not live concerts aired over the radio, and the band did not give permission for me to get them).

My iPod has somewhere around 9500 and my pc has 976 - no overlap between them both, so 10,476 total.

Of course not. I'd bet that 90% of peoples mp3's are bootlegged. Free music is the reason people tolerate such a crappy format, not because there's anything inherently good about it. It's like bragging about how many camcorder-booted vcd's you have instead of buying the DVD.

Nope. Most of mine would be not legal or fall into a gray area, I'm not sure of the stance of most of the bands. I don't THINK I have any from bands who bitch about taping at concerts.. well actually I do have some Metallica shows, so probably. In cases like Pearl Jam, I have purchased the concert CDs that they have officially released. I wish more bands would do that.

Well I got no problem with "bootleg" shows. I have a ton.

By "legal", I was referring to mp3s that people ripped from CDs they've bought or got off iTunes.
