Taylor Hicks shuns American Idol

What is he saying that's so bad? 1) He's not a big fan of watching AI, and plans to do other things with his time, and 2) he used AI as a stepping stone in his career. There's only 1 sentence in that article that mentions AI (talking about it "fizzling out" for him), and the rest talking about him trying to make it as a working musician. Besides it's Relix magazine -- maybe there was a lot of pot smoke in the room (or more, they were passing a joint around)? I wouldn't take it to mean much.

He's just saying what everyone is thinking. They're just there for the exposure, not because they're really devoted to American Idol and they love the show.

Futher his career indeed. T'was a joke before, 'tis a joke now. Good idea to release his album 12 days before Christmas. Can't find something for so-and-so last minute? There'll be plenty of those flying off the shelves out of desperation to have a gift IMO. If anyone even thinks about getting me this for Christmas, best cut out the middle man and buy yourself a coffin and hop in it - because I'll KILL YOU!

I'll admit to getting suckered into AI every year... and once the bald rocker got booted, I'll admit I was rooting for Hicks... but, once that grating car commercial he sang in came on, I thought to myself "Geesus, who REALLY is going to pop in a Taylor Hicks CD and listen to this shit?".

I love how you can barely see the rest of his band

No, you DON'T make me proud.
I'm guessing he figured he was doing a interview with an obscure music magazine that nobody but underground music fans (the kind that would shun Idol) would read. He was probably tying to build up some cred and figured none of his 'Idol fans' would ever hear about the interview in first place.
The problem for me is that this makes him look like even more of a poser. He was all too happy to grin like an idiot in those cheesy Ford ads and group numbers on the show, but when he's around the 'cool kids' he suddenly acts like he's above the whole thing.

I don't think anything he said was so bad. It's not like he said, "Damn the people who voted for me" or anything. Besides, his experience on the show was different from say Carrie Underwood. He and Simon clearly hated each other. They signed most of the top five and are releasing their cds before his. I can certainly see why he would have less love for the show.

The funny thing about him saying he doesn't watch it anymore is the fact that it hasn't been on the air for the last six months.
I haven't been watching it either.
