Criterion re-releasing Salo in 2007
From the Criterion blog:
http://www.criterionco.com/blog/index.html
There was a new print of Salo (with 50 minutes of previously unseen footage) at this years Venice Film Festival.
Don't know if any of the new footage will be on the disc. I can't imagine anything more depressing than a 3 hour cut of this film.
Anyway, the Ebay-ers will be none too happy.

This is the best news I've heard all year. I've been kicking myself for, like, ever for not buying this when it first came out. I've had to live with the old laserdisc lo these many years and it been, like, torture.

This is really great news for people who want to buy Salo at an affordable cost, and all the ebayers who auction off fake versions, and sell legit copys at ridiculous prices there can be none to pleased with this news. The white ring disc with the "nimbus" logo still will probably fetch around $200 or so on Ebay I would imagine after this release (collectors like to own the original all the time).
I was at DVDbeaver and the transfer for the CC looked pretty crappy. I'd hate to be that guy who spent $1,000 or so on the old Criterion Collection DVD on Ebay (watch out for throwing chairs for this news).

This has always been one of those wierd cases where I wanted it because I couldn't have it. Now that it looks like I can have it, I'm not sure I want it.

Thank sweet jesus i did NOT bite the bullet and pay a ton for it a couple of years ago, as I was planning to. And I'm not even a huge fan of the movie, but rather just a Criterion completionist.

I don't think I'll ever want to own this movie, but my (morbid) curiousity will probably get the best of me and I'll have to give it a rent...

The only reason I watched Salo once was for a paper I was writing; I can't imagine any reason for ever wanting to watch this again. It's great social commentary, Pasolini was a gifted artist, but I don't think I'll ever bring myself to watch it again - especially with 50 MORE minutes.
