Favorite Martin Scorsese film?
Hi guys.
I've been on a Scorsese kick lately and just went a marathon of a few of his classics: Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, Cape Fear, The Aviator.
Guy's a really talented director. Can't decide what my favorite film of his is. It's really tough to choose, but if had to pick one I'd say Casino, with Goodfellas and Cape Fear coming in tied for a close second. Casino just has it all: Gangster violence, betrayel, ambitions gone wrong, excellent setting, superb script and what is undoubtedly some of the best performances ever put to screen by Deniro, Pesci, Stone, etc. I could watch Casino every day and not get tired of it.
Cape fear is an entirely different kind of film, but man 'O man, did Deniro EVER outdo himself here! I mean this guy has such a range it's not even funny. I would have to label this as Deniro's most brilliant and most entertaining performance. So many lines from him had me in stitches:
"Ooooh Ooooh, I got the all over fidges on that one, you really shivered me up, I'm shivered all over!" ....
"I'm sorry your honor, that was argumentative" ......
"This is my night counselor, don't you step....on...my...night!"
Oh by the way....watched Raging Bull and although it was pretty good, I feel it's overrated and nowhere near the best boxing movie of all time....that honor still goes to Rocky II/Rocky III
Still haven't seen Taxi Driver or Mean Streets. What else do you recommend?
Anyway what is your fave Marty flick?

Another vote for TAXI DRIVER as Scorsese's best. And, yes, that's Cybill Shepard. And, yes, I agree with you that ROCKY is far better than the overrated RAGING BULL.

This is difficult. I have yet to see Aviator or Casino although I own both of them. Goodfellas and Taxi Driver I haven't seen in at least a decade, so my ranking is very fuzzy. VERY fuzzy.
I'd have to say, which of these would I want to watch again right now:
Cape Fear
The Departed
Goodfellas
Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
The first four I thought were all As. Raging Bull was an A- or a B+. A bit overrated IMHO.

GoodFellas. It's one of the few movies I never get tired of watching.
Oh, and while I wouldn't put it at the top of my list, Age of Innocence is VASTLY underrated...mostly because it's not typcial "Marty" fare.

Too easy of a question to be answered. How about an underrated/needs more exposure Scorsese film? My answers: King of Comedy and New York New York-they are interesting attempts at him doing a "comedy" and musical, but while being not the most successful, good films in their own right.

TAXI DRIVER by far...My favorite movie of all-time.
I would have to say Goodfellas is a second, followed then by Raging Bull.
King of Comedy-Extremely underrated
Raging Bull-Much better than Rocky...But I can still see how some would call it overrated...

Though it's probably not his best film, the one I've always enjoyed the most has been Casino:
"A lot of holes in the desert. And a lot of problems are buried in them holes. 'Cept you gotta do it right. You gotta have a hole already dug when you arrive with a package in the trunk. Otherwise you're talking about a half hour/forty-five minutes of digging. And who know's who's gonna be coming along in that time. Before you know it, you gotta dig a few more holes. I mean you could be out there all fuckin' night."
But I think the Aviator has the best ending of any Scorsese film:
"The way of the future."
"The way of the future."
"The way of the future."
