Weekend Box Office Thread 10/13/06 - 10/15/06

Friday's Numbers:

1 Grudge 2 10.100 NEW NEW 3211 3,145 10.100
2 The Departed 5.700 146% -34% 3017 1,889 43.651
3 Man of the Year 4.000 NEW NEW 2516 1,590 4.000
4 Texas Chainsaw...2 2.800 224% -62% 2820 993 25.507
5 Open Season 2.700 246% -32% 3687 732 50.854
6 The Marine 2.300 NEW NEW 2545 904 2.300
7 The Guardian 1.700 163% -42% 3044 558 36.966
8 Employee of the Month 1.600 183% -62% 2579 620 15.910
9 One Night with the King 1.500 NEW NEW 908 1,652 1.500
10 Jackass 2 1.000 115% -51% 2330 429 66.049
12 The Illusionist $385,000 - 825 $467 35.200
13 The Queen $270,000 - 46 $5,870 1.109
* Infamous 0.120 NEW NEW 179 670 0.120

There's debate over how much The Grudge 2 made on Friday, I went with Lee's posting since it was already formatted (I know I'm lazy), though BOM has it listed as make $400k less than whats listed. ShowBizData also has slightly different numbers.

The Departed is down only 33 to 34% from last weekend, which is extremely rare when it comes to R-rated movies that start relatively big. Seems to have struck a chord, good for Marty, it looks like he may finally have a good sized hit on his hands.

After only 1 day though, Infamous is bombing (thus far), I guess the public wasn't in need of another Truman Capote film after all (it averaged $670 per screen on Friday, which is downright awful for a relatively high profile limited release movie, don't expect an expansion.) By comparison, The Queen averaged $5,870 per screenon Friday, (noteably though, is playing on about a 3rd of the screens that Infamous is).

Well, Man of the Year is not the bomb I thought it would be (and funny that it has a similar title to Employee of the Month). I was thinking it would have American Dreamz-level numbers (sub $6mm) but I guess Robin Williams still draws in crowds. I expect a pretty big drop next weekend though.

I think Infamous lacked promotion. I really wanted to see it but had no idea it started this week. LMS and Illusionist continue to rack up money.

I hope Departed does well. WB needs a big movie and it would be nice for Scorcese to get a critical and popular hit.

I've not seen The Departed yet, but will soon. That 30% drop is impressive, especially in a time were it seems everything drops by half the second weekend.

i didn't see a lot of promotion for infamous either and i go to the theatre just about every weekend. still want to see science of sleep so hopefully it will becoming to more theatres soon. not too surprised about the grudge 2 since horror movies seem to draw pretty much no matter what, but i would have liked to seen the departed take another weekend since it was so good IMO.

Infamous is only in 179 theaters, so widespread advertising would have been a waste, I'm sure it popped up in the limited markets though.

I saw quite a few ads for it, but mostly during late night (Leno, Letterman).

I still wonder what makes people want to go see Open Season, seeing as it's the 73rd talking-animal CGI film this year.

They skipped 71 of the 72 other ones, and figured it was time to give in.

And it is like the 69th CGI film with the "fish out of water" plot.

Yeah, the word "redundant" certainly comes to mind. Time to close up this well.

Agreed. I think part of it can be attributed to those that liked it seeing it a second time.
