Did 'Bring It On' create the Teen Sports movie Genre ?

It's amazing how many movies Bring It on has inspired. Aside from the several straight to video sequels, there have been similar teen high school drama sports themed movies covering such sports as dancing, volleyball, gymnastics, drumlining etc etc

Now i'm sure there have been movies before Bring It on which had combined a sports theme with teen drama but not in that way.

Traits of this genre

1) Attractive young cast with necessary eyecandy

2) good sports persons v bad sports persons, usually some racial or socio economic based rivalry.

3) Obligatory huge big showdown, usually some event

4) Obligatory sappy romance angle

5) Obligatory morality tale with someone learning a valuable life lesson

6) Tight fitting clothing

7) Trendy, invariable hiphop related soundtrack

I have to admit, my girlfriend and i are suckers for these kind of movies

If when you mean sports you mean not really sports at all, like cheerleading and dancing then probably yes. But there's always been teen movies about football and such.

You mean all the other teen-centric movies before Bring it On don't count? Like Varsity Blues?

Karate Kid was the first movie that came to mind when I saw the thread. Items 6 & 7 didn't really apply but the rest sure did.

No, they just took the formula from films like Hoosiers and "modernized it" by making the characters hot, hip kids, and filling the musical score with da sickest tracks...

...yo.

How about Teen Wolf?

EDIT: Theatrical Release is 1985. Probably a few more before that, but still in the '80s.

No, but it inspired two more movies to be slapped with the name "Bring it On" in the title.

I've not watched the movie in awhile, but i don't recall any questions not being answered by the time the credits rolled.

Replace Hiphop with any mainstream music of the time and there you go. Really, Bring it on didn't add anything really new to the table that wasn't already there.

No, none of those are new, even in that combination. I like to think that maybe some of the movie's "attitude" is unique, but not having seen it, I can't really define it.

Pre-teen but how about the original "The Bad News Bears" (1976) and its sequels as the foundation for modern teen sports movies. "Breaking Away" from 1979 is out there too but I don't know that it fits the mold as well.
